Wayne County volleyball wins two in opening week

The Lady Cardinal volleyball team won their opening two games of the

season last week. Monday night at the Wayne County gymnasium, the Lady Cards

defeated Garrard County 2-0 (25-9, 25-6).

Thursday night at Centre College, the Boyle County Lady Rebels were

handed a loss by the Lady Cardinals 2-0 (25-13, 25-16).

"This is certainly a good start to our season," stated head coach

William Shearer. "We have tweaked and changed a lot of our ideas on hitting

and passing techniques over the last month. The young ladies have really

grasped it and worked extremely hard in taking pride in their individual

games."

Thursday night at Centre College was the first big test of the year.

"We haven't had this sort of test this early in the season since we've

started volleyball. Boyle is a veteran team and probably the best team from

the Northern part of the Region. We were very pleased with not only beating

them, but possibly playing our best volleyball since the beginning of

volleyball here in Wayne County. It was a complete match and the team work

was remarkable," remarked Shearer.

The opening game of the night got off to a sluggish start with the

homestanding Rebels getting off to a 3-0 lead. Then Junior Emily Keeton

rattled off 10 serves in a row and the score quickly shot out to 7 for the

cardinals.

We started off pretty slow with some bad digs, which led to bad sets,

but we settled down quickly and forced them into a few errors," stated

Shearer.

The Cardinals would never let the rebels pull any closer than 6 during

the first game, pulling away in the end for the 12-point win.

Shearer commented that,"It seemed pretty easy and that was not a good

feeling, because I knew Boyle would come out hungry for that second game."

But Wayne County came out strong once again and led throughout the game

in the second. The score ballooned to 10 points at the score of 16-6 before

the Lady Rebels put on a string of 6 unanswered points.

"We made some errors and didnšt get the ball over the net four times in

a row, and that will get any team a little momentum," stated Shearer.

The Lady Cardinals pulled it together and ended strong on kills from

juniors Sasha Chaplin and Atisha Gehring.

"Our middle hitters played real well against Boyle. We are trying to

replace our go-to player from last year in Kim Balcerzak, and I think the

foursome of junior Kellyn Munsey, junior Emily Keeton, and sophomores Ceysha

Clark and Brittany Guffey are taking care of business. That was a huge hole

that canšt be replaced completely. These girls have come a long ways and

have played the net well," Coach Shearer stated.

The Cardinals were led in assists by senior setter Jessica New. Starting

for her third straight year the Lady Cardinals will once again depend on her

for her precise setting.

"Jessica had a super game against Boyle County," commented Shearer.

While only committing two errors for the two games the Lady Rebels

committed multiple setting errors.

"When we can dig the ball to her, we know we are going to get a good

set, a high percentage of the time, and that is very important for a team

that relies on defense to win games. We feel like we can defend a lot of

balls and if we can just get good attacks that go over the net, then we feel

comfortable in winning a lot games."

The Lady Cardinals will be in action this week on Tuesday night at 44th

district opponent Monticello School at 6 p.m. with the junior varsity, and

the varsity playing afterwards.

The week will end at the Pulaski Invitational on Saturday where the Lady

Cardinals lost in the championship game last year to the homestanding

Maroons of Pulaski County.
