Wayne County volleyball team places second in Pulaski Invitational
The Wayne County Lady Cardinal Volleyball Team placed second in the
Pulaski Invitational for the second year in a row.
The Lady Cardinals were defeated by the homestanding Pulaski County
Maroons (81) by the score of 17-25 and 22-25 in the finals. The tournament
hosted 15 schools, with pool play on Friday night and Saturday morning,
followed by a single elimination tournament Saturday afternoon.
Saturday morning got off to a rocky start with Wayne losing to
Southwestern Pulaski in three games (25-15, 21-25, 12-15).
"Our first game against Southwestern was a huge disappointment. We felt
like we were the better team, but we certainly had a rough match. We made
many mental mistakes which led to easy points for Southwestern. Southwestern
has gotten a lot better since our scrimmage with them earlier this year. We
handled them pretty well in the scrimmage, but they were ready to play
Saturday morning and really deserved to win," stated Shearer.
Following the loss to Southwestern Pulaski the volleyball Cards beat
Madison Southern to round out pool play (25-11, 25-13). The Lady Cardinals
earned a wild card in the championship bracket and used the second chance to
make a run at the championship. The first game of the championship bracket
pitted the Cardinals up against Southwestern Pulaski for the second time
within four hours.
"I was glad we were playing them. I think our girls were excited to have
a second chance at them and maybe try to prove that we were the better
team," said Shearer.
That would hold true as the Cardinals won 25-8, 23-25, and 15-13.
"This was about an exact replica of the first match as it went down to
the wire once again. The girls really had to gut this one out. It was not a
pretty match but we found a way to win," stated Shearer.
After the win against Southwestern Pulaski in the quarterfinals, the
Cardinals faced the defending 12th region champs South Laurel in the
semifinals. Wayne won the match 23-25, 25-19, and 15-10.
"The South Laurel match was the best match of the day for us. The girls
finally started playing like they know how. It was a good test with a top
team in the region, and I was pleased with how the girls overcame a lot of
adversity. By the time we lost the first game 23-25 to South Laurel after
leading by 10 at one time, I was ready to pack it in and go home," stated
Shearer.
The Lady Cardinals had different ideas. Wayne won the next two games
going away by 6 and 5.
"I think we learned a lot about ourselves in that South Laurel game.
That being that we can play with the best, but we must play with that type
of attitude no matter who we are playing," commented Shearer.
In the finals, the Cardinals ran into a dominant Pulaski Team.
"Pulaski put a good whipping on us Saturday night. It has been a long
time since we have taken one on the chin like that," stated Shearer.
The Cardinals played their first game Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and
started the championship game at 8:30 Saturday night.
After playing four games and spending close to twelve hours in the gym,
the Lady Cardinals looked a bit tired.
"It just seemed like we were a half step slow and a couple of inches
more below the net out there. We put up a pretty good fight early in the
first game, but Pulaski just had too many weapons on the floor. I think we
have one of the top teams in the
region, but we are going to have to get better if we are going to have a
chance to win it all. We will go back to practice on Monday and just work
harder" said Shearer.
This week the Cardinals will be in action at McCreary Central on Tuesday
and play Casey County at home on Thursday.
