Wayne County Volleyball team wins two

The Wayne County Volleyball team bettered their record this past week to

8-2. The Lady Cardinals beat district opponents McCreary Central (8-6) and

12th region foe Casey County (11-5).

The Lady Cardinals moved to 2-0 in the 45th district with the win over

the Lady Raiders. Earlier this year the Volleyball Cards won at Monticello

25-13 and 25-14.

"We have two road wins in the district thus far, and that is important.

We are shooting for that number one seed, and getting by Monticello and

McCreary Central on the road really gets us on the right track," stated head

coach William Shearer.

The McCreary Central match was a tale of two stories. The first game was

nip and tuck until the 16-14 mark. The Lady Cardinals, with Sasha Chaplin

serving, ran off five straight points to 21-14.

McCreary Central would score on the next possession, then Sophomore

Middle Hitter Ceysha Clark served out the match with three straight serves.

The second game of the match saw domination on the part of the Lady

Cardinals. After being tied at 33, the game would be a run-away.

Junior weak-side hitter Sasha Chaplin served five straight times for a

14-8 lead, then McCreary scored their final point before junior outside

hitter Atisha Gehring served out the game with 11 straight serves.

"McCreary made quite a few of errors against us that second game. The

important thing is that we put them into the position to make those

mistakes," commented Shearer. "We preach and preach the idea of making good

attacks but make sure we give the other team opportunities to make mistakes.

If we are hitting it into the net and out of bounds, then we open the door

for close games. We donıt like close games, so we really try to make sure we

are getting it over the net."

The Cardinals were led by Sasha Chaplin and Atisha Gehring who made up

21 of the teams 50 points.

"Chaplin and Gehring played well with nice attacks, but everyone played

well. Our defense was solid and made good digs all night," said Shearer.

"Coach Rob Jones will have his Lady Raiders to play by district tournament

time. They have some nice athletes, and they will be a team to reckon with."

Thursday night the Lady Cardinals played host to the Lady Rebels of

Casey County. Wayne County won in two straight games by the score of 25-18

and 25-16.

"This was a nice win for us. Casey has two nice hitters and we defended

them well all night. Our back row players put us in the position for a lot

of nice attacks," stated Shearer.

Leading that defense was junior Emily Keeton with 24 digs and no errors,

and Atisha Gehring with 34 digs and two errors. The Lady Cardinals had 95

positive digs of 101 for an impressive 95 percent. Those positive digs led

to 78 of 95 on positive attacks.

The Cardinals had 19 kills on the night with junior middle hitter Kellyn

Munsey leading the way with 8 and Atisha Gehring with 6.

"Kellyn had her best game of her career against Casey. She had the 8

kills, but more impressively had only 1 error on 17 attacks," commented

Shearer.

The Lady Cards also served a perfect 48 for 48 for 100 percent. That

marked the first time the Volleyball Cards has accomplished the mark in the

four years of existence of volleyball.

Shearer stated, ³We take a lot of pride in serving. Each girl serves

close to 100 times during every practice. We stress the importance of it

every single day and it certainly showed against Casey County.²

Senior setter Jessica New served 13 for 13, Emily Keeton served 12 for

12, and sophomore Brittany Guffey served 10 for 10 on the night.

The other three servers were: Gehring 4 for 4, Chaplin 6 for 6, and

Clark 3 for 3. Setter Jessica New had 66 positive sets on the night with 0

errors.

She led the team with 15 assists. Kellyn Munsey had 4 blocks on the

night to lead the Lady Cards. Emily Keeton and Ceysha Clark chipped in with

1 block apiece.

The Cardinals will be in action this Tuesday against Russell County

starting at 7:00 at the Wayne County gymnasium. J.V. will start at 6:00
