Local banks sponsor benefit concert for hurricane victims

A lot of people have been looking for ways to help victims of Hurricane

Katrina. Giving food and water is a great way to provide initial relief, but

the needs of the people who lost homes, jobs and all their possessions go

beyond that.

That was the thought shared by employees at all three local banks, and

this week Monticello Banking Company, First Southern National Bank and BB&T

will sponsor a benefit concert to raise money to help the victims of the

hurricane.

"Money is what they need," said Pattie Tate, with Monticello Banking

Company. "This is not something that is going away...This is something that

is ongoing for all of us."

Tate said that there is a lot of interest in music in this area, and

there are local musicians who draw a lot of fans to their shows. The benefit

concert, which will be held Thursday, September 22 at the Wayne County High

School gymnasium, grew from that idea.

"We have groups that people know and they enjoy listening to," noted

Tate.

The slate of musicians include Ben West, Sage Knoll and Klassic Tymes.

That list is expected to grow as organizers continue to finalize plans for

the concert.

Tim Hopper, with First Southern National Bank, said that it is good to

see different people in the community work together for this cause.

"It's great that we have local artists who are willing to give of their

time and we appreciate Superintendent John Dalton and the Wayne County

Schools for allowing us to use their facility," stated Hopper.

"It seems that in times of disaster, people come together to help

others, even when they live far away," he added.

"I think we have all been touched by this in one way or another, either

directly or indirectly," stated Larry Conner, with BB&T. "Itıs just

overwhelming to see what we have seen on television and in the media."

Conner noted it is especially difficult to see the list of children who

are missing or separated from their families.

"I just hope the community responds and I know they will," said Conner.

"This concert is just one way they can respond."

The concert will begin at 6 p.m. and will conclude at 9 p.m. Tickets

cost $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 5-12. They are currently

available at all bank locations.
