Wayne County Volleyball claims three wins

The Wayne County Volleyball team went 3-0 this past week with wins over

McCreary Central (12-12), South Laurel (16-6), and Russell County (10-8).

Wayne County improved their record to 18-8. With the two wins over

McCreary Central and Russell County the Lady Cardinals clinched the number

one seed for the 45th District Tournament.

Tuesday Night the Lady Cardinals hosted McCreary Central. The Volleyball

Cardinals won by the score of 25-19 and 25-11.

The Lady Cardinals came out slow against the Raiders. Falling down by as

much as nine points early in game one, the Lady Cardinals fought back with

thirteen straight points to take the lead by four.

Wayne County led late in the game 19-17 and then scored the next five

points for the win.

"We came out pretty slow against McCreary Central. We just came off a

tough weekend at Greenwood where we played four games on Saturday. We took

off Sunday and Monday, and I think that had a lot to do with the slow start"

stated Head Coach William Shearer. "We usually always practice the day

before the game, but because of the hectic weekend, we took off. I thought

the young ladies showed a lot of poise and determination in coming back and

taking the win in that game".

Game two of the match was all Wayne County. The Cardinals got off to a

11-2 score with Sophomore Brittany Guffey serving 11 straight times for the

Cardinals.

The Cardinals sharpened their game and never let McCreary score more

than two points consecutively.

"We cut down on our mistakes and was much sharper during that second

game. The second game we put a lot of balls in play and McCreary made a few

mistakes which gave us momentum" commented Shearer.

Thursday night, Wayne County traveled to South Laurel for a rematch of

last years regional semifinal where the Lady Cardinals were defeated by

South in three games. This night was a different story.

Wayne County won in two straight games by the score of 25-18 and 25-19.

In game one the Lady Cards led 9-8 when Senior Jessica New rattled off

10 straight serves for a 19-8 lead. South then came back to within 5 but got

no closer. Game two was much closer, with South leading until the 16-16

mark.

That is when Wayne score 6 straight points behind Sasha Chaplin to put

the game away.

"This game was a confidence builder for us. We were excited about

playing South, and we played our best game of the year. We got to more balls

than we have all year. South has some good hitters but it just seemed we dug

everything. After digging some of their harder hits, they got a little

frustrated then started trying to kill it, and it led to a lot of unforced

mistakes on their part" quoted Shearer. "A couple of girls played real well

for us against South. Junior Kellyn Munsey and Sophomore Brittany Guffey had

big nights at the net. Blocking and attacking on their part was the best it

has been all year. Their play really disrupted what South wanted to do".

Saturday afternoon the Cardinals were at home for a matinee with Russell

County. The Lady Cardinals won by the scores of 25-17 and 25-23.

Both games were nip and tuck with no lead being more than 5.

"Russell has potential of great proportions because they are so big at

the net. They are by far the tallest team in the region. When you have big

girls at the net, then you have a chance of winning a lot of easy points and

that is scary to me," stated Shearer. "We were not quite as sharp against

Russell but we pulled out the win and that is important in district play.

This game guaranteed us a number one seed in our district, and that is one

of our goals we set at the first of the season."

This Tuesday the Cardinals will be on the road to Lincoln County with

freshman starting at 5:30 p.m. followed by the junior varsity and varsity.

The Cardinals will play host to Madison Central Wednesday night with

junior varsity starting at 6 p.m.
