W.C. Volleyball defeats Lincoln, Madison Central
The Wayne County Volleyball team bettered their record this week to 19-9
with wins over Lincoln County and Madison Central. With the two wins, the
Lady Cardinals moved to within one win of having three straight 20-win
seasons.
"I think three twenty-win seasons in a row would be pretty impressive
for a team that has only been in existence for four years" stated head coach
William Shearer. "Of course winning 20 games doesn't give you byes and wins
in season ending tournament play, which is the most important part of the
season. I think it does show how hard the young ladies have worked in the
first four years of the program and they certainly deserve recognition for
quality volleyball".
Tuesday night the Volleyball Cardinals traveled to Lincoln County for a
12th region match-up. The Cardinals won by the score of 25-9 and 25-15. This
marks the third straight year the Lady Cardinals have defeated Lincoln
County and moves the all-time record to 3-1 favoring the Volleyball
Cardinals.
In the win, senior setter Jessica New had 84 sets with 18 assists.
Leading in kills for the night was junior Kellyn Munsey with 8. Also with
kills were: Emily Keeton (6), Ceysha Clark (3), Atisha Gehring (3), Sasha
Chaplin (3), and Brittany Guffey with (2). Kellyn Munsey had 5 blocks on the
night with Ceysha Clark adding 2 of her own.
Leading in digs on the night was Atisha Gehring with 30, followed by
Sasha Chaplin with 27, and Emily Keeton with 19. On the night Atisha Gehring
served a team best 17 for 17 from the service line.
One night later the Cardinals hosted 11th region foes Madison Central
(12-12). The match-up was the first between the two schools and the result
was a win for the Volleyball Cardinals by the score of 25-6 and 25-13.
"This might be the best we have played all year" commented Shearer. "The
first game we made one error, and that is pretty impressive. I don't think
Madison Central played their best, but we had a lot to do with it. I was
certainly pleased with our intensity in the first game and the end of the
second."
On the night, Jessica New had 36 sets with 10 assists. Atisha Gehring
led the way in kills with 5, followed by Emily Keeton (3), Kellyn Munsey
(3), Sasha Chaplin (2), Brittany Guffey (l), and Ceysha Clark (1). Kellyn
Munsey, Emily Keeton, and Ceysha Clark each had 3 blocks on the night.
Atisha Gehring and Sasha Chaplin led the way in digs with 14 each. Service
leaders for the night were Atisha Gehring serving 14 for 14, and Sasha
Chaplin serving 12 for 12.
The Lady Cardinals will be in action Tuesday, October 4 against North
Laurel at the Wayne County gym. J.V. will start at 6p.m., followed by the
varsity. The game can be seen live on Channel 8 starting around 7 p.m.
