Cards open district action at Corbin
Shannon Hutchinson
Sports Writer

The Wayne County Cardinals, 4-3 on the season and coming off an open

week, begin district play this Friday night at Corbin's Campbell Field. The

homestanding Redhounds are also coming off an open week and own a 2-5 mark.

The contest marks the 22nd meeting between the two schools with Corbin

winning the past 18 games in the series, including a 51-14 decision last

season at Jewel Field.

The Redhounds opened the schedule with five straight losses, but the

squad will enter the match up on a two game winning streak. Corbin's first

win of the season was a 27-19 win over Pulaski County and they followed that

up with a 34-31 win over rival Middlesboro.

"Don't let their record fool you, Corbin is still Corbin and they've

played a very tough schedule. They also had some injuries early, but as

usual they're healthy for the district," said Wayne County head coach Shawn

Thompson.

Talented sophomore quarterback Clint Cashen has completed 67 of 122 pass

attempts with 5 touchdowns. Cashen's favorite target has been All-State

candidate Eric Blackwood. Blackwood also a threat to run the ball, leads the

team with 29 catches for 297 yards.

"Clint Cashen is a very good quarterback that makes good decisions. Eric

Blackwood is a very athletic and dangerous offensive weapon, plus the

Freeman kid is a very good runningback." said Thompson.

Blake Freeman paces the ground attack with 301 rushing yards and two

touchdowns.

The Redhounds average 16.1 points per game, using a passing attack that

nets just under 140 yards per game.

Wayne County's defense will have to be ready to face a Corbin squad that

has passed for more yards than they're rushed for, through seven games.

"Defensively we have to be focused on our jobs and prepare for a very

good passing team. Usually with Corbin you think about their power

running-game, but they have a very good quarterback and several very capable

receivers, so we have to be ready for both the run and the pass," said

Thompson.

The Cards' offense will face a Corbin defense that has allowed a sub-par

29.8 points per game. Wayne County will look to senior quarterback Ryan

Steele to pace the attack. Steele leads the team in rushing and passing

yards.

"Corbin is very aggressive on defense and swarm the football well, so

offensively the battle must start on the line of scrimmage. We have to

climinate penalties and turnovers, plus put together four quarters of solid

football. If we do that, I think good things will happen," said Thompson.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Campbell Field. Details on

the game in next week's Outlook.
