Trial dates set for murder cases

Trial dates have been set in two local murder cases, following pretrial
conferences in Wayne Circuit Court on Tuesday, October 4.
A jury trial for Emma Bertram, who is charged with murder in connection
with a two-vehicle fatal collision in May, has been set for April 5 and 6,
2006.
Bertram and her attorney, Tom Carroll, were both in court Tuesday
afternoon for the brief hearing.
No other matters involving the case were taken up during that hearing.
The charges stem from a May 10 collision that claimed the life of Eric
Adkins, 23, of Monticello.
According to police reports at the time of the crash, Bertram was
traveling south on KY 1275 when she collided with a northbound 2002 Lincoln
driven by Adkins.
Officials stated at the time of the accident that it was alcohol-related
and a blood sample was collected from Bertram.
She was later indicted on a charge of murder by the Wayne County Grand
Jury. She is also charged with first degree assault in connection to the
injury of a passenger in the Adkins' vehicle.
It will be more than a year before a jury will hear the case of Rodney
Burnett, who is charged in connection with the June stabbing death of Gregg
Jones.
The incident occurred on Highway 167, and Jones' body was found face
down in Town Creek in the early morning hours of June 10.
Burnett appeared in Wayne Circuit Court on Tuesday, October 4,
represented by the Department of Public Advocacy.
Circuit Judge Vernon Miniard has set aside the week of October
30-November 3, 2006 for Burnett's trial.
