A Wayne County teenager was killed Wednesday, October 12 when a car

struck his bicycle. A local man has been charged with second degree

manslaughter in connection with the death.

According to Kentucky State Police Trooper Parrish Baker, Gary Catron,

17, died when he was struck by a Ford Thunderbird driven by Roger Smith, of

Monticello. The collision occurred on the Missouri Hollow Road at 4:39 p.m.

Smith, 43, fled the scene, according to the arrest citation filed in

Wayne Circuit Court. He apparently drove to a nearby relative's home,

concealed his vehicle, and fled into the woods on foot, according to the

citation.

Wayne County Sheriff James Lynn Hill said his department located Smith a

short time later and took him into custody. Hill said a blood test was

conducted, and officials indicated that alcohol was a factor in the

collision. No test results were available at press time.

Smith has been charged with second degree manslaughter, leaving the

scene of an accident and D.U.I. Smith is currently lodged in the Wayne

County Detention Center under a $100,000 cash only bond.

He made his first court appearance on Monday afternoon before District

Judge Robyn Williams. Smith, represented by Jason Kinser with the Department

of Public Advocacy, entered a plea of not guilty. A pretrial hearing has

been set for Wednesday, October 26 at 1 p.m.

Deputy Coroner Forrest Hicks pronounced Catron dead at the scene at 5:15

p.m. An autopsy was conducted in Frankfort on Thursday, according to Hicks.

Catron was a senior at Wayne County High School. Family, classmates and

friends gathered at the school's gymnasium Sunday afternoon for funeral

services.

Classes were dismissed for fall break until Tuesday morning, but school

officials planned to have counselors on hand to help students as they came

back to school.

Catron is survived by his parents Debbie Criswell-Flynn and Jerry Lynn

Catron, a brother, Michael Catron, and two sisters, Angela Criswell-Hatfield

and Kimberly Michelle Burnett. Burial was in the Sandusky Chapel Cemetery.
