The Wayne County Cardinals met homestanding Corbin, last Friday night at
Campbell Field, in the district opener for both teams.
Both teams were coming off open weeks, as the Cards entered with a 4-3
record and the Redhounds owned a 2-5 mark.
The contest marked the 22nd meeting between the two schools, with Corbin
winning the last 18 games in the series, including a 51-14 decision last
year at Jewell Field.
Corbin sophomore quarterback Clint Cashen completed 10 of 13 passes for
202 yards and totaled two touchdowns, as the Redhounds claimed a 49-24
district win.
Cashen scored on a 4 yard run, plus connected with Ryan Tate on a 19
yard scoring pass, as the winners totaled 349 yards of offense.
Junior runningback Blake Freeman led the rushing attack with 83 yards on
18 attempts. Freeman scored on runs of 14 and 1 yard, while Eric Blackwood
scored twice on 1-yard runs, as Corbin improved to 3-5 on the season.
"We dug ourselves a hole down 21-0 in the first half and just didn't
come out ready to compete. We battled back and cut the score to 28-17 and
had the football, but once again we didn't capitalize on our chances. We
have to do a better job of coming out ready to play from the first whistle.
Give Corbin all the credit, they just wanted it more than we did." said
Wayne County coach Shawn Thompson.
Wayne County, which dropped to 4-4, totaled 256 yards of offense on only
8 first downs.
Senior quarterback Ryan Steele had a team best 73 rushing yards on 15
attempts, with 3 touchdowns.
Steele scored on runs of 1 and 67 yards, plus connected on a 59 yard
scoring strike to Tyler King, as the Cards set a program record for most
points scored ever against Corbin (24).
"I didn't like the way we came off the ball early, but overall
offensively we were able to do some good things. For the first time all year
we didn't have a turnover or an offensive penalty, so that's certainly
something we hope to build on," said Thompson.
Corbin opened the game with the football and used just 6-plays to march
64 yards and score on a Blake Freeman 14 yard touchdown run. The conversion
failed, leaving the score 6-0 with 8:55 left in the first period.
Corbin made the most of great field-position and stayed on the ground
for 8 of 9 plays, as Freeman added his second touchdown of the quarter on a
1 yard run. Clint Cashen added the two-point conversion, to push the score
to 14-0 with 2:07 left in the first stanza.
Wayne County managed just one first down in the opening quarter, as the
squads traded punts on the next three series.
"We just came out flat and didn't come off the ball very well on defense
or tackle very well on defense," said Thompson.
The Redhounds pushed the lead to 21-0 at the 4:06 mark of the second
quarter. Clint Cashen completed a 19 yard touchdown pass to Ryan Tate, to
cap-off a 2-play 63-yard drive. The chance Hendrickson extra-point left the
score at 21-0.
Wayne County answered back with a scoring drive of their own. The Cards
used 7-plays to travel 59 yards and score on a Ryan Steele 1 yard run. The
key play of the march was Steele's 25 yard completion to Tyler King. Joe
Coffey added the extra-point, to leave the halftime score at 21-7.
The Cards opened the second half with the football, but the offense
failed to pick-up a first down and was forced to punt.
Corbin responded with an impressive 8-play, 62 yard drive that ended
with a Clint Cashen 4 yard touchdown run. Cashen set up the score with
passes of 20 and 29 yards to Ryan Tate.
"Corbin has a great sophomore quarterback in Clint Cashen. Cashen makes
good decisions with the football, plus he has several different offensive
weapons. He runs their offense well, but they are typical Corbin in the fact
they have so many good skill players in Freeman, Blackwood and Tate.
Defensively you certainly can't key on just one player," said Thompson.
The Cards came right back with some offensive fireworks of their own.
Ryan Steele completed a 59 yard bomb to Tyler King for a touchdown, which
capped-off a 3-play 64 yard drive.
"That was a big catch by Tyler King. I really thought he played very
well on both sides of the ball. He had 84 yards receiving and 12 tackles,"
said Thompson.
Joe Coffey booted the extra-point, to close the gap to 28-14 with 4:46
left in the third period.
Jordan Bertram recovered a Corbin fumble on the following kickoff, as
the Cards recovered the football on the Corbin's 35 yardline.
The Cards used 8-plays to drive 27 yards, but had to settle for a Joe
Coffey 25 yard field goal. The kick left the score 28-17 with 1:41 left in
the third quarter.
Corbin's defense scored the game's next points, as Ryan Steele was
tackled in the end zone for a safety. The Hounds owned a 30-17 lead with
11:41 left in the game.
The Redhounds then returned the free-kick to the Cards' 48 yard line and
used 5-plays to travel to the end zone and score on an Eric Blackwood 1 yard
run. The conversion pass failed, leaving the score 36-17 with just over 9
minutes left in the contest.
Wayne County answered right back with the second big play of the half.
Ryan Steele scored on the drive's first play from scrimmage, on a 67-yard
touchdown run. Joe Coffey added the point-after, to leave the score 36-24.
"Ryan showed some speed and made the big play. Both of our big plays
came when all 11 guys did their job and executed," said Thompson.
The Redhounds added the game's final score with 1:15 left in the game,
on a C. J. Light 1 yard touchdown run. Light set up the score with a 21-yard
run and the extra-point pushed the final score to 49-24.
A review of the stats show several different Cards had big nights on the
tackle sheet. Joe Coffey led the attack with 14 stops, while Ryan Steele and
Tyler King finished with 13 and 12 stops each.
Cody Neal and Charles Spradlin contributed 7-stops each, as eight
different Cards netted five or more total tackles.
The win improved the Redhounds to 21-1 all-time against Wayne County.
Up next for the Cards is a Friday night road trip to Garrard County. The
Golden Lions are 3-5 on the season and coming off a 37-33 win over Casey
County.
"A very important district game for our team, if we want to have any
shot of hosting a playoff games. Garrard County is a very big team with good
team size and speed, so we'll have to put four quarters together," said
Thompson.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Garrard County High School.
