Ag. Dept. abandons plans to close Farm Service Agency

The Agriculture Department has abandoned plans to close more than 700

Farm Service Agency offices across the country, including the local office.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, October 18 by J. B. Penn, Under

Secretary for Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services.

Locally, a petition drive was completed on October 14 and letters

protesting the closure of the local FSA office were forwarded to state and

national leaders. Wayne County was one of 39 Kentucky offices slated to be

closed.

"There is still need to review our field delivery system in Kentucky

because of the loss of the tobacco program and reduction in our staffing

number," stated Jeffrey S. Hall, FSA State Executive Director. "We are

waiting for direction from our National Office on how to deal with these

issues."
