Wayne County Volleyball team wins third straight district championship at Russell County High School
The Wayne County Volleyball team won their third straight district
championship October 11 at Russell County High School.
The Lady Cards completed their third straight year undefeated in regular
season and post season in district play.
Since the realignment of districts and regions across the state of
Kentucky in 2003 the Volleyball Cards have posted a record of 26-0 in the
district.
This year the 45th district tournament was completed on one night at
Russell County High School.
The number one seeded Wayne County Cardinals took on Monticello in the
opening round.
The Volleyball Cards won in two straight games by the score of 25-9 and
25-13.
The win moved the Cardinals to the championship game against the
homestanding Russell County Lady Lakers which were victorious over McCreary
Central.
"Anytime you start the post season, you know that you have to win or you
are going home, so to get that win against Monticello was a relief," stated
head coach William Shearer. "We handled them pretty easy during the regular
season, but you just never know when it comes tournament time. We did come
out and play pretty well against Monticello and that was pleasing".
After watching Russell County defeat McCreary Central in three games the
championship game took place. Wayne County defeated the Lady Lakers in two
straight games by the score of 25-9 and 25-8.
"I wish all district tournaments were like this" commented Shearer. "We
played some dominant volleyball over here tonight. It seemed like an easy
night of volleyball, and was not very stressful at all. The reason being
that our girls played so well. We just didn't make many mistakes tonight,
and when we don't make a lot-of mistakes we are tough to beat."
"We set a couple of goals before each season. The first goal that we set
is earning the number one seed for the district tournament. The second goal
we set is winning the district championship. We took care of those two goals
by working extremely hard this year in practice. These young ladies are very
dedicated to this team and that makes me extremely proud to be their coach,"
said Shearer. "They came to every single practice this year and worked to
get better. We accomplished what we did because of the determination, and
work ethics of the young ladies."
The 45th All-District team consisted of three members of the Wayne
County Volleyball Team. MVP of the tournament was senior setter Jessica New.
Included on the team was Sophomore Brittany Guffey and Junior Atisha
Gehring.
The Lady Cardinals season came to an end in the first round of the 12th
region tournament where they were defeated by region champs South Laurel
21-25 and 20-25.
The Volleyball Cardinals ended their season with a record of 22-10. This
marked the Cardinals third straight 20-win season.
This was Senior setter Jessica New's last game as a Lady Cardinal
Volleyball team member.
She started for three years at setter and led the Cardinals to a record
of 78-22 over those three years.
I don't think our girls or people around the school understand how
valuable Jessica has been to our team these past couple of years" stated
Shearer. "She has been the best setter in this region for two straight years
and has been the backbone of three very good teams here at Wayne County. I
know for a fact that it will be tough to replace her. She has such
tremendous talent in setting the ball and we will certainly miss her next
year."
