The 2005 Cardinal football team notched its place in history Friday
night, when it won the first ever home playoff game. The 28-10 win over
Christian Academy of Louisville marked only the second playoff win in the
history of the Wayne County football program.
"We're extremely excited," said Coach Shawn Thompson. "This is good for
our program and it's good for the kids."
There was celebration after Friday night's game, including a ceremonial
dumping of ice water on the Cardinal coach. "I was so excited I didn't
really even feel it," said Thompson.
Fire trucks lined up near the football field to give the players a ride
around town to celebrate the Sweet 16 birth in the Class AA state playoffs.
But Thompson said his players opted to wait for that ride.
"They said they wanted to wait," said Thompson.
Friday's win was one in a string that the Cards have put together late
in the season, and Thompson said his squad has been tremendously focused
during this stretch.
With Friday's celebration behind them, the team was back to work early
this week preparing for this Friday's game at Louisville Western. Thompson
said Western is a good fundamental football team with a lot of speed.
Wayne County will leave around noon Friday for the trip to Louisville
Western. Thompson said he expected a large contingent of Cardinal fans to
also make the trip.
"We have a lot of fan support, and a lot of times we have more fans at
(away games) than the home team," said Thompson.
Kickoff Friday night is set for 7:30 p.m.
