A large number of candidates have already filed for the 2006 local
election. Wednesday, November 9 was the first day that candidates could file
for next year, when all local offices will be on the ballot, and it was a
very busy day at the County Court Clerk's Office.
Eighteen candidates filed on that first day and since then 10 more have
declared their intentions as well. If this trend continues, it could mean a
record number on the ballot for the May primary election.
Several incumbents have already filed. They include County
Judge-Executive Bruce Ramsey. Leland Harold Coomer, also a Republican, has
filed as a candidate in that race.
District One Magistrate Jerry Sloan has filed to retain his seat. He is
the only candidate who has filed in District One so far.
The District Two magisterial race has drawn the largest number of
candidates, including incumbent Jess Jones. Other Republican candidates in
District Two are Tony Randall Bowlin, Rickey Sexton, Barney Tom Denney, and
Roger K. Blevins. Darrell G. Dishman, a Democrat, has filed in District Two
also.
District Three Magistrate Ricky Worley has filed for re-election. Two
other Republican candidates have also filed in that race including: Dale C.
Vaughn and Brandon Pitman.
In District Four, two candidates have filed, James H. Daniels II and Bob
R. Denney, both Republicans.
Wayne County Sheriff James Lynn Hill has Republican opposition from
Forrest Sexton and Michael A. Parmley. Charles L. Boston, a Democrat, has
also filed for sheriff.
Jailer Ray C. Upchurch has filed for re-election. Other candidates
include Jerry Guinn, a Republican, and Clyde Jeffrey Foust, a Democrat.
Property Valuation Administrator Bobby R. Upchurch II is the only
candidate in that race so far. County Attorney Lee Tobbe also has no
opposition at this time.
Two candidates have filed for County Court Clerk, Josephine Gregory and
Melissa Turpin, both Republicans.
Forrest Hicks has filed as a Republican candidate for Wayne County
Coroner.
Two candidates have filed in constable races. Kendall Tucker, a
Republican, has filed in District Three. Curtis W. Lasley, a Republican, has
filed in District Four.
Candidates have until 4 p.m. on January 31 to file for next year's
primary election.
