The man accused of killing his mother and his brother in a shooting
incident at their Hillard Avenue home appeared in Wayne District Court on
Wednesday, November 23.
Robert Dennis, 43, appeared before District Judge Mike Lawson for
arraignment on two counts of murder. Dennis is accused of shooting his
mother, Dorothy Dennis, 70, and his brother, Gary L. Dennis, 48, during an
incident that occurred on Friday, November 18.
Gary Dennis died at the emergency room of the Wayne County Hospital and
Dorothy Dennis was flown to a Lexington hospital where she later died.
During Wednesday's court appearance, Dennis was declared indigent and
Lawson appointed the Department of Public Advocacy to represent him in court
proceedings. Jason Kinser, who appeared with Dennis, waived formal
arraignment and entered pleas of not guilty on behalf of his client.
Lawson set a preliminary hearing on the matter for December 5 at 1 p.m.
in Wayne District Court. Lawson indicated that any motions that are filed in
the case would be heard at that time.
Dennis apparently turned himself in at the Monticello Police Department
following the shooting.
According to a report filed in the case, Dennis told dispatchers that he
had shot his family. During a search of Dennis' vehicle, the Wayne County
Sheriff's Department recovered a .22 rifle and a .22 pistol, along with
numerous live .22 rounds.
Dennis is additionally charged with possession of a firearm by a
convicted felon and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.
Dennis remains lodged in the Wayne County Detention Center. No bond has
been set in the case.
