The Monticello Lady Trojans hosted West Jessamine last Saturday
afternoon at Monticello High School Gym. Monticello entered the 12th Region
match-up coming off a 69-36 season-opening loss at Cumberland County. The
contest marked West Jessamine's third game of the week, as the squad dropped
decisions to Clark County 63-28 and Anderson County 58-39.
West Jessamine used a balanced attack with three players scoring in
double figures and a 17-3 third quarter run, en route to claiming a 63-44
win. Junior forward Katie Bailey made 10 of 16 free throws and scored a
game 16 points, as the Lady Colts improved to 1-2.
The backcourt of sophomore Sam Shipley and senior Katherine Smith added
15 and 13 points, respectively, as 10 different Lady Colts scored in the
contest.
"We played right with them for most of the first half, but we missed
some easy shots and got into some foul trouble. With all of our foul
problems we had to move some people out of position and our inexperience
showed. At times we moved the ball well and finished, we just have to finish
more plays," said Lady Trojans head coach Marla Kelsch.
Monticello, which dropped to 0-2, was led by 5-2 senior guard Britany
Carrender. Carrender netted a team high 15 points, aided by 3 3-pointers and
a perfect 2 of 2 effort from the charity stripe.
"Britany had a really good first half and shot the ball well, especially
from 3-point range. This was a game that with all the fouls it was hard to
get into any flow or rhythm," said Kelsch.
Mary Beth Cooper, a 5-9 sophomore forward, added 9 points, paced by a 7
of 10 effort from the free throw line. Fellow sophomore Chelsea Humble added
6 points, on 2 3-pointers, as eight different Lady Trojans scored in the
game.
West Jessamine's Sam Shipley led all players with 8 points in the
opening quarter, as the visitors claimed a 10-8 lead. Monticello was able to
stay close as Britany Carrender netted 5 of her 9 first half points, in the
opening 8 minutes.
The Lady Colts converted on 11 of 14 free throws in the second stanza
and used a 21-10 run, to own a 31-18 halftime advantage. The Lady Trojans
made just 8 of 14 free throw attempts in the period and totaled just 1 field
goal.
"Our foul problems forced us to move some people around, plus
offensively we once again missed some easy shots. I think once we make some
shots good things will happen. We just didn't get into any flow in the
middle quarters," said Kelsch.
Monticello was held without a field goal in the third frame, as
Katherine Smith sparked the Lady Colts with 7 points, during a 17-3 third
quarter run. West owned a 48-21 lead after 24 minutes.
"Our rebounding hurt us several trips, plus when we had to move several
people around our inexperience showed," said Kelsch.
The Lady Trojans ended with their highest scoring quarter of the young
season. The hosts drained 4 3-pointers and placed five different players in
the scoring column, to close the final score to 63-44. Britany Carrender and
Chelsea Humble led the way with 6 points each, as the Lady Trojans owned a
23-15 fourth frame advantage.
A review of the stats shows West Jessamine made 14 2-point goals and 4
3-pointers. The Lady Colts connected on 23 of 40 free throws for 57 percent
and totaled 24 turnovers.
Monticello tallied 7 2-point baskets with 5 3-pointers. The Lady Trojans
converted on 15 of 27 free throws for 56 percent and finished with 30
turnovers.
"We have to take better care of the basketball and do a better job on
the boards," said Kelsch.
Raven Frost and Leandra Brown totaled 4 points each, while Brittany
Crabtree finished with 3 points. Whitney Owens totaled 2 points and Cortney
Morrow added 1 point, to round-out the eight Lady Trojans in the score book.
Monticello has a very busy week ahead, as the squad plays three games
this week. The Lady Trojans host 12th Region foe Danville on Monday night
and end the week in the Pendleton County Classic.
The Lady Trojan meet tournament host Pendleton County on Friday night
and then will face either East Jessamine or Covington Holy Cross.
"We had a really good game with Danville last year, so hopefully we'll
be ready to go back to work. We're also looking forward to the Pendleton
County Tournament as a chance for our team to go on the road and play games
on back to back days. I know a lot of times with young teams they actually
play better on the road, so hopefully that will be the case," said Kelsch.
