Clark sentenced to ten years for shooting Wright

The man found guilty of second degree assault in connection with the

shooting of a Monticello Police Officer received the maximum sentence.

Barney Clark was sentenced to 10 years in prison for shooting Officer

Sheridan Wright.

The sentencing hearing for Clark was held in Wayne Circuit Court on

Tuesday, December 6 before Judge William Cain, who served as special judge

for the trial, which was held in October.

A local jury found Clark guilty of the lesser assault charge following

more than two days of testimony.

The jury found Clark not guilty of three counts of wanton endangerment

first degree. But the jury could not agree on a sentence for Clark.

The panel spent more than an hour deliberating in the penalty phase,

then informed Cain they could not reach a decision.

The minimum sentence for second degree assault is five years and the

maximum sentence is 10 years.

Cain credited Clark with 874 days already served. Clark has been jailed

since the July 17, 2003 incident in which Wright was shot in the face.

The officer lost his eye because of the shooting.

Wright was responding to a disturbance call on Craig Street, where Clark

resided, when the incident occurred.

Testimony during the trial revealed that Clark had been drinking and was

outside with a shotgun when Wright arrived at the scene.
