The Wayne County Lady Cardinals met McCreary Central last Thursday night
at Cardinal Gym in the district opener for both teams. The Lady Cards
entered the match-up with a 3-0 record, while the Lady Raiders owned a
perfect 2-0 mark. Both teams entered as two of the favorites in the 48th
District and 12th Region.
Wayne County senior forward Latoyia Green led three players in double
figures with 16 points, as the Lady Cards built a 26-13 halftime lead and
moved on to claim a 53-38 home win. Green made 7 of 11 field goal attempts,
including 2 of 3 3-point attempts, plus grabbed 11 rebounds with 4 steals in
just under 30 minutes of action.
"Latoyia is one of our senior leaders and we expect those type of
numbers from her. I thought she gave a great effort on both ends of the
floor and stepped up her play on the glass. She also did a nice job
defending Lindsey Waters and hopefully this game will be a
confidence-builder for her," said Lady Cards Tim Pyles.
The freshman duo of Heather Stearns and Meg Latham added 11 and 10
points respectively, as each player grabbed 9 rebounds each. Wayne County
placed seven different players in the scoring column and claimed an
impressive 33-20 rebound advantage.
"I thought both Heather and Meg gave solid efforts. Heather was pretty
solid in her all-around game and this was back to back good games for Meg.
We had several people step up and make some big plays in this game," said
Pyles.
Courtney Duncan tallied 7 points with 5 boards and Kara Gothrup totaled
4 points, 8 rebounds with a team best 5 assists. The win improved the Lady
Cards to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in district play.
McCreary Central, which dropped 2-1, was led by 6-0 junior forward
Lindsey Waters. Waters totaled 16 points, on 7 of 13 shooting from the
field, plus converted on 2 of 6 free throws. Garra Kidd added 8 points, as
six different Lady Raiders scored in the contest.
"Going into the game I was very concerned about their offensive
capabilities. In Waters and Tara Tucker they have two of the better players
in our region. I do think our defensive intensity and depth were huge keys
in this game. McCreary Central is going to get better and they have a very
nice team," said Pyles.
The Lady Cards opened 6 of 13 from the field and used five different
scorers to push to a 15-8 first quarter lead. Latham led the hosts with 10
points in the opening half, while Central opened 3 of 6 from the field.
Defense dominated the second stanza, as Wayne County made just 5 of 20
field goal attempts and the Lady Raiders tallied on only 2 of 11 field
attempts. The Lady Cards used an 11-5 run to own a 26-13 halftime advantage.
"Our defensive pressure was very good and I thought both Kara Gothrup
and Kayla Jones really gave their guards some problems," said Pyles.
Lindsey Waters netted 12 points in the second half, including 6 points
in the third frame, as the visitors used a 14-12 quarter edge, to close the
gap to 38-27.
"Southwestern has a very talented and athletic team, so that will be a
challenge as well. We want to take care of business in the district, so we
can look forward to our two holiday tournaments. To get to that part of our
schedule with a 3-0 district record would be a real positive," said Pyles.
