The Wayne County Cardinals lost at McCreary Central 60-55 in a game

played on Tuesday, December 13. The loss marked the first time the Cardinals

have lost two games in the district since 1991.

The game marked the 75th meeting between the two schools. Wayne County

leads the series with a 54-20 record. The last time the two teams met, Wayne

County won the game by a score of 61-47 on March 1, 2005 in district

tournament action.

At McCreary Central Tuesday night, Wayne County showed flashes of its

basketball ability, including a third quarter run that put the Cards in the

lead. Wayne County managed to score only 7 points in the final quarter, as

the homestanding Raiders took the win.

"Once again we made progress but failed to finish the job," said Wayne

County Coach Rodney Woods. "We play good basketball in spurts, but we just

didn't have the consistency we needed to come away with the victory."

The Cards kept it close in the first quarter, trailing McCreary Central

18-13 at the stop. The Cards scored 14 points in the second quarter to cut

it to a 4-point game, 31-27, at the half.

Wayne County enjoyed a tremendous third quarter effort, scoring 21

points to take a 48-45 lead by the end of the stanza. The Cards couldn't

sustain the intensity in the final eight minutes and chalked up their fourth

loss of the season.

"We need to improve offensively," said Woods. "Two areas really stand

out. Number one is careless turnovers and number two is poor shooting."

For the game, Wayne County committed 14 turnovers. McCreary Central had

15 turnovers.

Wayne County shot 42 percent from the floor, connecting on 22 of 52. The

Cards were 7 of 23 from behind the arc for 31 percent.

"Our three point shooting must improve if we are going to become a good

team," stated Woods. "Also this team has to mature to the point where they

can take the opposition's scouting report and carry out assignments. We're

having too many mental breakdowns on the defensive end."

McCreary Central shot 45 percent from the floor, connecting on 19 of 43.

They were 7 of 11 on 3-pointers. There was a glaring difference from the

free throw line, as the Raiders were 15 of 21, while Wayne County was 4 of

6.

"We must get the ball to the basket, either off the dribble or by

passing so that we get the free throw line more often," said Woods.

"McCreary shot 21 free throws to our 6 so we must attack the goal more."

Wayne County was led offensively by Jacob Gregory with 15 points.

Gregory also led the Cards' rebounding effort with 9, and he also had 3

steals in the contest.

Robert Corder and Cody Decker each scored 10 points. Decker had 3

blocked shots in the game as well.

Wayne County was outrebounded in the game 38-34.

McCreary Central was led by Josh Bartley with 20 points. Also in double

figures for the Raiders was Josh Phillips with 13.

With the win, McCreary Central improved to 3-2 on the season. The Cards

dropped to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in district action.

"It's probably hard to see but we are getting better," said Woods. "We

have to keep on working and good things will start to happen. There is still

a lot of basketball to be played and hopefully we can continue to improve

for March."

The Cards faced another district foe later in the week, as they hosted

Southwestern. For details on that game, see a story in this edition of The

Outlook.
