The Wayne County Lady Cardinals met Monticello last Monday night at MHS
Gym in an important 48th District match-up for both teams. Wayne County
entered the cross-town contest with an overall record of 4-0, while the Lady
Trojans owned a 0-5 mark. The Lady Cards owned a 1-0 district tally, while
the game served as the district-opener for Monticello.
Wayne County senior guard Lindsey Dishman scored a game high 18 points,
as the Lady Cards built a 40-6 halftime lead en route to claiming a 72-35
road win. Dishman shot 6 of 13 from the field, which included a 4 of 8
effort from 3-point range, plus made 2 of 2 free throws, as Wayne County
improved to 5-0.
Sophomore guard Courtney Duncan added 14 points with 6 boards, while
Heather Stearns totaled 9 points and 6 rebounds. Kara Gothrup finished with
6 points and a game high 8 assists, as Wayne County totaled 20 assists
against just 12 turnovers.
"I thought we came out and played really well in the first half and that
was certainly a positive. We didn't keep our intensity in the second half
and just didn't finish well and that's starting to become a habit. If we
don't correct that habit it will come back to haunt us soon," said Lady
Cards Coach Tim Pyles.
Meg Latham and Emilee Burton tallied 6 points each, as 10 different Lady
Cards scored in the win. Senior forward Latoyia Green grabbed 8 rebounds
with 3 points, as Wayne County claimed a 34-22 rebound advantage.
Monticello, which dropped to 0-6, was plagued by a tough first half and
31 turnovers. The Lady Trojans were led by the effort of freshman forward
Raven Frost. Frost scored a team high 13 points, aided by 6 of 9 shooting
from the field.
"Our inexperience really showed up in the first half and we didn't
handle their pressure very well. Their pressure defense was the best we've
faced this season and we just didn't respond very well," said Monticello
Coach Marla Kelsch.
Kayla West and Mary Beth Cooper added 8 and 6 points respectively, as
six different Lady Trojans scored in the contest. Monticello opened just 1
of 13 from the field, but the squad rallied to make 12 of 22 shots in the
final half, a stat not lost on the coach.
"To our kids' credit we didn't quit after halftime and managed to run
some offense down low in the second half and get some good looks at the
basket," said Kelsch.
Wayne County opened 5 of 19 from the field and used solid
pressure-defense to claim a 14-4 first quarter edge. Courtney Duncan led all
players with 6 points in the frame, while the hosts were led by the 2 points
each of Brittany Carrender and Raven Frost.
The Lady Cards heated up in the second stanza and used six different
scorers to spark a 26-2 run. Wayne County shot 11 of 23 from the field in
the period and owned a 40-6 halftime lead.
"I thought our intensity was good and we were able to get some easy
looks off our defense. Anytime you're playing a district game on the road,
you want to come out and take care of business and we did that for 16
minutes," said Pyles.
The teams played on near-even terms in the third quarter, as Wayne
County outscored the hosts 14-11 and pushed to a 54-17 advantage. Lindsey
Dishman paced the Lady Cards with 9 points in the period, while Raven Frost
led the hosts with 6 points.
Eleven different players scored in the final 8 minutes, as the teams
battled to an 18-18 tie and Wayne County claimed the 72-35 win. Both teams
shot the ball better in the second half, as the Lady Trojans converted on
54 percent of their attempts and Wayne County connected on 39 percent of
their field goal attempts. The Lady Cards did drain 5 of 11 3-point attempts
in the second half.
A review of the stats shows Wayne county shot 27 of 70 overall for 38
percent and made 7 of 22 3-pointers for 32 percent. The squad tallied 14
steals and connected on 11 of 22 free throws for 50 percent.
"Overall this was a good district win on the road for our team.
Hopefully we can build on this and keep improving as a team," said Pyles.
Monticello countered with 13 of 35 shooting overall for 37 percent and
missed on all 5 3-point attempts. The squad totaled 6 assists and made 9 of
17 free throws for 53 percent.
"We have to take better care of the basketball and get more shots up.
Hopefully we'll learn from this game and go back to work," said Kelsch.
Both teams returned to action later in the week, as Wayne County hosted
Southwestern on Friday night and Monticello met Richmond Model on Saturday
night.
