Cardinals host annual football banquet
Shannon Hutchinson
Sports Writer

The Wayne County Football Cardinals, coming off a very successful 7-5

season, recently held their annual banquet at the high school cafeteria. The

Cards, under the second year direction of head coach Shawn Thompson, had

much to celebrate after a very memorable 2005 season.

Wayne County won a playoff game for only the second time in the school's

history, plus hosted a playoff game for only the second time in the

program's nearly 40 years of existence.

The honors also reached the individual level as senior

quarterback-linebacker Ryan Steele was named District Player of the Year.

Steele became the first Wayne County player to ever receive the award.

Head coach Shawn Thompson, 13-10 overall after two seasons, also was

recognized as the program's first ever District Coach of the Year.

"I was proud of our kids' effort all season and it started with the

outstanding work ethic of our senior class. Those guys set the tone and have

helped build a foundation of what's expected from our varsity team. We want

to not only compete for district titles, but start winning them and advance

more than a game or two in the state playoffs," said Coach Shawn Thompson.

The successful 2005 Campaign didn't happen in just a few months during

the season.

"This team worked so hard in the weight-room and off season. I certainly

hope our underclassmen understand now that good things must start to happen

in the winter and that confidence will carry over through the spring and

summer," said Thompson.

The following is a list of the 2005 awards and the winners of each

honor.

Every player on the team also received a special trophy as a Varsity

Award.

"This was certainly a special night and a very special team. I was proud

of everyone on the team and we'll certainly miss this very special senior

class," said Thompson.

The 2006 team is already back to work in the weight room, as the off

season program is in high gear.

"We're already back to work and we know we have a lot of key players to

replace. We can't sit around and feel good about last year, it's time to

work," said Thompson.

Congratulations to the 2005 Cardinals on a very memorable and successful

season.
