Three local soldiers return home from duty in Iraq

National Guard soldiers with Battery A of the 1st 623rd Field Artillery

unit arrived home from Iraq on Christmas Eve. Local soldiers included Justin

Thomason, Shane Farmer and Perry Denney.

A welcome home ceremony for Battery A, which is headquartered in

Tompkins-ville, was held at the Cave City Convention Center on December 24.

The 180 men of Battery A served 10 months in the area of Baghdad,

providing security and convoy escorts for the United States Army. The unit

suffered one fatality while in Iraq.

Specialist Eric Lee Toth, of Edmonton, died as a result of injuries

sustained by an improvised explosive device on March 30.

Soldiers with the local National Guard unit are slated to return home

from Iraq sometime in January. No specific details have been released yet,

but watch future editions of The Outlook for homecoming information.
