Wayne County loses to White County 70-45

The Wayne County Cardinals continued to search for their first win of

the season as they took on White County, Tennessee in the opening round of

the Mid-South Classic on Monday, December 19. The game was played at

Upperman High School in Baxter, Tennessee and was part of a four-day

tournament.

Wayne County lost to White County 70-45 in the opening round of the

tournament. The Cards suffered through another game of inconsistent

shooting, hitting only 13 of 37 from the floor for 35 percent.

"A very disappointing effort all the way around," said Wayne County

Coach Rodney Woods, after his team dropped to 0-6 on the season. "Early we

shot the ball pretty decent, but we gave up way too many easy baskets. In

the second quarter, we gave up easy baskets due to so many turnovers."

The Cards kept it close during the opening quarter and only trailed by

4, 16-12, at the stop. But White County held the Cards to only 6 points in

the second quarter and pushed the advantage to 37-18 at the half.

It didn't get any better for Wayne County in the third quarter, as the

Cards continued to struggle offensively. Wayne County scored only 9 points

in the stanza, while White County scored 19. The Cards trailed 56-27 going

into the final quarter.

"White County is a veteran team with very good size and shooters," said

Woods. "Early we were in pretty good defensive position on the perimeter but

they knocked down 3's fairly easily."

Woods had the opportunity to experiment with his lineup, getting some of

his younger players into the action, including seventh graders Gavin Dunagan

and Austin Shearer.

"We played 10 people tonight and will continue to search for some

combinations that work," said Woods.

Wayne County was led offensively by guard Dustin Wells and Ronnie Ellis,

each with 12 points. Wells was 3 of 4 from behind the arc. Ellis was 2 of 5

from the floor and 2 of 3 from behind the 3-point line.

"Ronnie and Dustin shot the ball pretty well from the perimeter but we

need to get an inside game going," said the Cardinal coach. "Our focus the

next few games will be to get an identity in the post. Cody, Jacob and W.K.

need to play stronger and become more consistent on the boards."

The inside trio combined for 11 points in the game. Decker led Wayne

County on the boards with 6 rebounds. Gregory had 2 steals and Wells led the

Cards in assists with 5.

Wayne County shot 43 percent on 3-points, hitting 7 of 16. They were 12

of 18 from the line for 66 percent.

White County was led offensively by Colby Holman and J. J. Taylor, each

scoring 12 points.

White County shot 51 percent from the field, hitting 28 of 54. They were

5 of 9 from behind the arc for 55 percent. White County hit 9 of 16 from the

charity stripe for 56 percent.

White County had a slim 28-27 rebounding edge over Wayne County. The

Cards committed 24 turnovers, compared to White County's 12.

"We will continue to work and try different combinations in search of

positive plays," stated Woods. "We are just having too much bad basketball."

"We need some small victories like winning a quarter then a half which

will lead to winning a game," Woods continued. "We need leadership more than

ever so hopefully someone or more than one will step up."

Next up for Wayne County was a contest the following day against

Franklin County, Tennessee.
