The Wayne County Grand Jury handed down murder indictments against two

local men, following a session on Tuesday, December 20. Both indictments

remained sealed until they were served.

Robert Dennis has been indicted on two counts of murder in connection

with the November shooting deaths of his mother and his brother. Dennis

remains lodged in the Wayne County Detention Center where he has been held

since the incident.

The indictment stems from a November 18 shooting at a residence on

Hillard Avenue which left Dorothy Dennis, 70, and Gary L. Dennis, 48, dead.

Gary Dennis died at the Wayne County Hospital after sustaining gunshot

wounds to the head and the arm. Dorothy Dennis was flown to the University

of Kentucky Medical Center, where she died later that day.

Police learned of the shooting that afternoon, when Robert Dennis turned

himself in at the Monticello Police Department. After searching the suspect

and his vehicle, police found a .22 rifle and a .22 pistol along with

numerous live .22 rounds.

In addition to the two counts of murder, Dennis was also indicted for

possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a handgun by a

convicted felon, possession of a controlled substance first degree and

possession of marijuana less than eight ounces.

Dennis was scheduled to be arraigned in Wayne Circuit Court on Tuesday,

January 3. No bond has been set in the case.

The grand jury also returned a murder indictment against Roger Smith, in

connection with the October 12 death of Gary Catron. Catron, 17, was riding

his bicycle in the Missouri Hollow community when he was struck by a car and

died.

According to police reports, Smith was driving the Ford Thunderbird

involved in the incident. Police said Smith fled the scene and tried to hide

the car and then went into a wooded area on foot. He was apprehended by the

Wayne County Sheriff's Department a short time later.

Smith was originally charged with second degree manslaughter, but was

indicted for murder.

He was also indicted on charges of operating a motor vehicle under the

influence, leaving the scene of an accident, unlawfully operating a motor

vehicle on the highway with no insurance, failure to produce insurance card,

and improper registration plates.

Smith was also scheduled for arraignment in Wayne Circuit Court on

Tuesday, January 3. He remains lodged in the Wayne County Detention Center

on a $100,000 cash only bond.
