The Wayne County Lady Cardinals met Wildwood, Fla., last Tuesday night
at Nature Coast HS Gym, in the opening round of the Nature Coast Holiday
Classic.
The Lady Cards, coming off a championship in Russell County's Laker One
Stop Classic, entered with an 8-1 mark. Wildwood entered with an impressive
10-3 record.
Wayne County opened the game on a 19-8 run and never looked back, while
winning every quarter, en route to claiming a 66-42 opening round win.
Senior guard Lindsey Dishman led the attack with a game high 15 points,
in just over 16 minutes of action, as three different Lady Cards reached
double figures in the win.
Dishman finished 6 of 9 from the field, which included a 2 of 4 effort
from 3-point range, plus made 10 of 2 free throws, as Wayne County improved
to 9-1 on the season.
"Lindsey just didn't rely on the three, she really attacked the basket
and that's what we need out of her. When she attacks the basket, it opens
things up for everybody," said Lady Cards Coach Tim Pyles.
The freshmen duo of Heather Stearns and Meg Latham added solid efforts
in the win. Stearns shot 4 of 11 from the field and 4 of 8 from the charity
stripe to tally 13 points with 9 rebounds. Latham made 6 of 8 shots from the
field and totaled 12 points with 8 boards.
"Meg had a solid game and I thought Heather came in off the bench and
gave solid minutes. I really thought our bench play was a key in this game,"
said Pyles.
Latoyia Green contributed 7 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists, while
Courtney Duncan chipped-in with 5 points and 4 steals. Kara Gothrup tallied
a game high 6 assists with 2 points, as 10 different Lady Cards scored in
the win.
"I really think we were mentally sharp and ready to play after some time
off. We had a really good workout the night before and this was certainly a
good way to start our week," said Pyles.
Wildwood, which dropped to 10-4, was led by the 10 points of Tashy
Jones. AKU Sesler added 8 points as eight different Wildwood players scored
in the contest.
"Wildwood has a very athletic team with excellent team speed. They beat
the team we lost to by 20 points earlier this season, so they have a nice
basketball team," said Pyles.
Five different Wayne County players scored in the first frame, as the
Lady Cards made 8 of 13 shots and rolled to a 19-8 lead.
Lindsey Dishman led all players with 10 points in the first half, as
Wayne County used a 14-12 period edge to take a 33-20 halftime advantage.
The locals cooled-off in the second stanza and made just 4 of 18 field
goal attempts and 5 of 10 free throws.
Dishman led five different Lady Cards scorers in the third frame with 5
points, as Wayne County used a 16-10 tilt to push a 49-30 lead. Wildwood
couldn't close the gap and made just 5 of 16 field goal attempts in the
quarter.
Eleven different Lady Cards played in the final quarter, as the squad
ended the game on a 17-12 run and cruised to a 66-42 win.
Kayla Bowlin and Emilee Burton finished with 4 points each, while Rachel
Coffey and Whitney Neal tallied 2 points each, to round-out the 10 different
Lady Cards in the scoring column.
Wildwood, which edged to a 37-36 rebound advantage, shot 21 of 68
overall for 31 percent and misfired on all 6 3-point attempts. The squad
totaled 13 steals, with 7 assists against 20 turnovers and missed all six
free throw attempts.
The Lady Cards shot 25 of 65 overall for 38 percent and tallied on 5 of
11 3-pointers for 45 percent. They also made 11 of 20 free throws for 55
percent and totaled 13 steals with 19 assists and 19 turnovers.
"Overall I thought this was a really good total team effort. We were
able to get good minutes off our bench and I thought as a unit we executed
pretty well. To have 19 assists shows we're finding the open player in good
spots," said Pyles.
The win advanced Wayne County into a second round match-up with a very
talented Boynton Beach team on Wednesday night.
