Lady Trojans roll over Ranney 50-22
SHANNON HUTCHINSON
Sports Writer

The Monticello Lady Trojans met Ranney (N.J.) last Wednesday, December

28 in the second round of the Surf-n-Slam Classic held in San Diego,

California. The Lady Trojans entered the match-up with a 0-8 record and were

coming off a 42-22 loss to Crystal Springs (CAL) in the tourney's first

round. Ranney entered the contest with a respectable 3-2 mark.

Monticello turned a 12-5 first quarter lead into a 26-6 halftime

advantage en route to a commanding 50-22 second round win. Senior guard

Britany Carrender led the attack with a game high 15 points, as the Lady

Trojans finished with 5 players netting 7 or more points in the win.

"Britany had a big game with 3 3-pointers and really handled the ball

well against their pressure. We had really good offensive balance and I

thought our team came out ready to play. We cut down on our turnovers and

executed the best we have all season," said Monticello coach Marla Kelsch.

Carrender finished 4 of 6 from the free throw line and totaled 4 field

goals, which included 3 from behind the 3-point arc. The trio of Whitney

Owens, Mary Beth Cooper and Kayla West all added 8 points each, as seven

different Lady Trojans scored in the contest.

"This was a big win for our team to get our first win of the season and

anytime you win that adds more excitement and confidence for the team. We

certainly needed it, plus this game allowed us to really enjoy our day off

the next day," said Kelsch.

Ranney (N.J.), which dropped to 3-3, was led by the duo of Jennifer

Chavers and Suzy Harris. The combo netted team honors with 7 points each, as

just five Ranney players scored in the game.

"This was a game where both teams pressed each other most of the time.

Ranney had pretty decent size and a set of nice guards. Our ability to

handle their pressure and make some shots was big," said Kelsch.

Three different Lady Trojans scored in the opening frame, as Monticello

opened with a 12-5 first quarter lead. Britany Carrender led all players

with 5 points in the period.

Carrender added 6 points in the second stanza, aided by a 4 of 4 effort

from the free throw line, while Whitney Owens connected on 2 3-pointers, as

the Lady Trojans used an impressive 14-1 run to claim a 26-6 lead. Ranney

made just 1 field goal in the first half and tallied on 4 of 8 free throws.

"I think Whitney and Britany are getting more comfortable playing

together and our backcourt play is improving," said Kelsch.

Raven Frost scored all 7 of her points in the second half, including 5

in the third period, as the Lady Trojans pushed to a 35-16 lead. Ranney had

their highest scoring quarter of the game in the frame and claimed a 10-9

scoring advantage.

Five different Monticello players scored in the final frame, as the

squad sealed the win with a 15-6 fourth quarter run. The Lady Trojans picked

up their first win of the season with the 50-22 second round win and

improved to 1-8 on the season.

Jordan Hensley and Leandra Brown contributed 2 points each, to round-out

the seven winners in the scoring column.

A review of the stats shows Monticello totaled 13 2-point baskets with 5

3-pointers. The squad tallied on 9 of 17 free throws for 53 percent and

finished with 23 turnovers.

"Our turnovers were not where you want them, but we almost cut them in

half from the day before, so that was certainly a positive," said Kelsch.

Ranney finished with 7 2-point baskets and 1 3-pointer. The New Jersey

squad converted on 5 of 13 free throws for 38 percent and finished with over

30 turnovers.

Up next for the Lady Trojans was an off day before the squad resumed

action on Friday against fellow Kentucky school Walton Verona.

"To win and enjoy our day of sight-seeing was huge. It really allowed

our kids to relax and feel good on our day off. As a team we went to Sea

World and rode a trolley downtown, so certainly some experiences of a

lifetime for our kids. I really think our kids enjoyed the trip and it

allowed us to bond as a team," said Kelsch.
