There were a lot of smiles to be found Saturday afternoon, as family and
friends of the local National Guard unit planned for the soldiers'
homecoming later this month.
The Family Support Group met at the Armory to discuss activities that
will be part of the homecoming ceremonies, tentatively set for early
February. The group plans to host a Homecoming Parade for the unit, as well
as a special community gathering. More specific dates and times will be
announced later, according to members of the support group.
At this time, three members from the unit are in Fort Dix, New Jersey as
part of an advance party, according to information from family members.
Tentatively, the unit is scheduled to leave Camp Anaconda on January 12.
From there, they will go to Kuwait for a couple of days.
After leaving Kuwait, the soldiers will fly to Ft. Dix, where they will
spend approximately a week before coming home.
Tentatively, the unit should be home sometime between January 21-23, but
these dates could change.
The Family Support Group will meet on Saturday, January 14 to prepare
"Welcome Home" banners. Over the past week, yellow ribbons have been placed
along Main Street, as well as signs welcoming the soldiers home.
The City of Monticello and many businesses in the community have kept
Christmas decorations and lights up so the soldiers from the unit can enjoy
the holiday spirit.
