Dennis and Smith arraignments delayed
Melodie Phelps
News Editor

Arraignments for two Wayne County men indicted for murder have been

postponed. Both Robert Dennis and Roger Smith appeared in Wayne Circuit

Court on Tuesday, January 3.

The two men had been indicted in December on murder charges in two

separate incidents. Dennis is charged with murder in connection with the

November shooting deaths of his mother, Dorothy Dennis, and his brother,

Gary Dennis.

Dennis was also indicted for possession of a firearm by a convicted

felon, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, possession of a

controlled substance first degree and possession of marijuana less than

eight ounces.

Smith was indicted on one count of murder, operating a motor vehicle

under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident, unlawfully operating

a motor vehicle on the highway with no insurance, failure to produce

insurance card, and improper registration plates.

Those charges stem from the October 12 death of Gary Catron, 17. Catron

was riding his bicycle in the Missouri Hollow community when he was struck

by a car and died. According to police reports, Smith was driving the Ford

Thunderbird involved in the accident.

During last week's court appearance, Circuit Judge Vernon Miniard, Jr.

postponed arraignments for both men until March 22. In the meantime,

competency evaluations have been ordered for both Dennis and Smith.
