Events will commemorate anniversary of battle

This year marks the 144th anniversary of the Battle of Mill Springs and

several events will be held Saturday to commemorate the event. The Mill

Springs Battlefield Association has planned several events, including a

wreath laying, a cannon salute and a guest speaker at Zollicoffer Park in

Nancy.

Again this year, members of the Battlefield Association are planning a

recreation of General Zollicoffer's and General Thomas' 1862 march through

the Battlefield Corridor. The walk begins in Wayne County at the

Brown-Lanier House in the Mill Springs community at 6 a.m. It will follow

the Old Mill Springs Road to the Mill Springs National Cemetery in Nancy,

which was the same route followed by the advancing and retreating forces on

January 19, 1862.

The 10-mile march will include crossing the lake from the south landing

below Mill Springs to the north landing at Beech Grove. Participants can

join the march at any point along the way.

Participants must complete a registration form and a release. For more

information contact Norrie Wake, Administrator of the Mill Springs

Battlefield Association at (606) 679-1859 or by e-mail at

administrator@millsprings.net.
