Top-ranked South Laurel overwhelms Cards 90-56

Friday night's assignment was a tough one for Wayne County, as the

Cardinals traveled to South Laurel High School to face the top-rated team in

the state. There were no surprises as South Laurel earned a lopsided 90-56

win over Wayne County.

The game marked the 22 meeting between the two schools, which have been

dominant in the 12th Region over the past few years. In fact, the last five

regional championships were won by either Wayne County or South Laurel.

Wayne County leads the series between the two schools 11-10. They last

met on January 6, 2005, when South Laurel won 93-48.

In Friday night's match-up, Wayne County committed too many turnovers

and were dominated on the boards, as South Laurel jumped out early and never

looked back.

South Laurel was up 27-14 at the end of the first quarter. Wayne County

scored only 8 points in the second quarter, while South Laurel's offense

continued to roll. They were up 54-22 at halftime.

"We must learn to compete," said Wayne County Coach Rodney Woods. "It is

that plain and simple. We have a great group of young men but are just not

very competitive by nature."

Wayne County scored 14 points in the third quarter, while South Laurel

put 21 on the board. The homestanding squad led 75-36 going into the final

eight minutes.

Offensively, Wayne County was led by sophomore point guard Dustin Wells,

who finished with a game-high 22 points. Wells hit 4 of 6 from the floor and

was a percent 4 of 4 on 3-pointers.

"Dustin Wells continues to shoot the ball well and play extremely hard,"

said Woods. "He is becoming a good leader and we need some people to

follow."

Jordan Perkins finished with 11 points, hitting 3 of 4 from behind the

arc. Seventh grader Gavin Dunagan chipped in 8 points and led Wayne County's

rebounding effort with 7. He also had 3 assists.

"Jordan Perkins has had two good games in a row. He is shooting the ball

really well," said Woods.

Freshman guard Ronnie Ellis was back in action after missing games due

to a knee injury. He and Cody Decker each chipped in 5 points.

"It was good to have Ronnie Elllis back after missing three and a half

games due to a knee bruise," noted Woods.

For the game, Wayne County hit 19 of 38 from the field for 50 percent.

They were 10 of 18 from behind the arc for 55 percent. From the free throw

line, the local team was 8 of 12 for 66 percent.

"We shot the ball pretty well, especially from 3, but we made way too

many turnovers," said Woods. "And we did not rebound for the second game in

a row."

South Laurel out rebounded Wayne County 40-22. The local team committed

30 turnovers in the contest, while South Laurel only had 11.

"This of course was a very good South Laurel team, but we expect our

guys to compete harder and I think we will in the future or we will have to

change some players and find some that will compete each time out," said

Woods.

With the win, South Laurel improved to 12-1 on the season. Wayne County

dropped to 2-10 on the season.

Up next for Wayne County was a Tuesday night game at Madison Southern.
