Trojans defeat Episcopal 83-53 in San Diego
The Monticello Trojans had spent a memorable week in San Diego,
California. But the squad intended to head back home with more than just
memories. They wanted a win in the final round of the Surf and Slam Classic,
which was played on Friday, December 30.
That's just what they got, as the Trojans' offense hit high gear for the
83-53 win. It marked the most points that Monticello has put on the board
this season.
The first quarter was a shootout, with both teams hitting high
percentages from the field. Monticello emerged with the early 24-21
advantage. The Trojans were led offensively in the opening quarter by Sam
Lair who had 5 quick points. But Lair went down with an ankle injury early
in the second quarter.
With their point guard out, Monticello turned to sophomore Tyler Bell to
lead the team on the floor. Bell put together a great effort, as the Trojans
continued to flourish offensively.
Monticello scored 28 points in the second quarter and turned up the
defensive intensity. The Trojan press was too much for Episcopal. Episcopal
subbed five players at a time to try to keep fresh legs on the floor. But
the opponents still appeared tired, and the Trojans were having fun playing
the game.
At halftime, Monticello led 52-34. The Trojans did not let up in the
final two quarters of action. After Episcopal hit two easy shots early in
the third quarter, the Trojans refocused.
Give credit to the senior leadership, and the offense of Lance Garrett.
With Episcopal pressing and trapping on every possession, the Trojans found
Garrett under the goal several times for layups. Garrett also hit a 14-foot
jump shot during the quarter and Monticello led 67-41 going into the final
eight minutes.
Monticello came out of the press in the final quarter and concentrated
of their half court defense. All the varsity players had a chance to get
some game experience in this contest.
The Trojans were led by Bell and Garrett with 16 points each. Phillip
Inman scored 14, Branscum had 11 and Zeb Davis finished with 9 points.
"Zeb was a major factor in this game, scoring 9 points, but most
importantly showing leadership and bringing a certain level of toughness to
the team," said Monticello Coach Gary Abbott.
Though no Monticello player made the All-Tournament Team, the Trojan
coaching staff felt that Justin Branscum certainly drew some attention.
Branscum averaged in double figures and had an average of 6 steals per game
during the tournament.
"This is the best game this team has played all year and if they
continue to play this hard they will be a very tough team for any opponent
in the region," stated Abbott.
The Trojans traveled back home before New Year's and took a few days
off. They were back in action on Tuesday, January 3 against Danville.
