The Monticello Lady Trojans hosted district rival McCreary Central, last
Friday night at MHS Gym. Monticello entered the match up with a 1-9 overall
record and a 0-1 district tally. The Lady Raiders owned a 7-5 mark with a
0-1 league record. The contest was opening game of a girls/boys doubleheader
and both teams first games of the 2006 portion of the schedule.
McCreary Central broke open a close game with a 21-9 third quarter run
and never looked back in claiming a 72-35 district road win. Junior center
Lindsey Waters led three winners in double figures, with a game high 27
points, as the Lady Raiders improved to a 8-5 overall and 1-1 in district
action.
Waters totaled 11 field goals with a 5 of 5 effort from the free throw
line. Tara Tucker added 16 points, aided by 4 3-pointers. Joni Marion
tallied 3 3-pointers with 13 points, as eight different Lady Raiders scored
in the game.
"McCreary Central has a very nice team with a good inside-outside game.
Waters is one of the best players in our region and they shot the ball
extremely well from 3-point range," said Monticello coach Marla Kelsch.
Monticello, which dropped 1-10 overall and 0-2 in district play, was led
by freshman forward Raven Frost. Frost scored 13 points, on 6 of 7 shooting
from the field and a 1 of 2 tally from the free throw line, plus grabbed 4
rebounds in 19 minutes of action. Kayla West paced the reserves with 6
points and 3 boards, as eight different Lady Trojans scored in the contest.
Tela Casada finished 2 of 2 from the field and netted 5 points, as
Monticello shot a very respectable 46 percent from the field.
"We missed some easy shots early, but overall we shot the ball pretty
well from the field. Our big problem is we're still not getting up enough
shots at the basket. We cut our turnovers down some, but we still need to do
a better job of taking care of the basketball, which will allow us to get
more shots up," said Kelsch.
Senior guard Britany Carrender added a solid overall game in the loss.
Carrender netted 4 points and 4 rebounds, with a team high 8 assists in 30
minutes of action.
Tara Tucker and Lindsey Waters tallied 6 points each in the opening
quarter, as Central opened with a 17-8 first period advantage. Three
different hosts scored in the frame, paced by the 4 points of Raven Frost.
The duo of Waters and Joni Marion accounted for all 11 of their teams
points in the second stanza, as the Lady Raiders used an 11-8 tilt to take a
28-26 halftime advantage. Monticello used a balanced attack in the opening
half, as six different hosts scored in the half.
Seven different Lady Raiders scored in the third period, led by the 8
points of Waters, as the visitors used a 21-9 run to push to a 49-25 lead.
Raven Frost was the Monticello offense in the quarter and scored all 9 of
her team's points.
Lindsey Waters finished with 16 points in the second half, as McCreary
Central ended the game with a 23-10 run and cruised to a 72-35 win.
The trio of Whitney Owens, Vanessa Branscum and Jordan Hensley all
finished with 2 points, while Mary Beth Cooper tallied 1 point, to round-out
the Lady Trojans in the scoring column.
McCreary Central totaled 20 2-point baskets and 8 3-pointers. The squad
tallied on 8 of 11 free throws for 73 percent.
Monticello finished 16 of 35 overall for 46 percent and missed all 9
3-pointers attempted. The hosts made 3 of 10 free throws for 30 percent and
totaled 19 rebounds, 12 assists with steals against 24 turnovers.
"We just have to go back to work and try to build on the positives and
learn from the negatives. We have such a young team and I do think we're
learning and improving each time out. We're still trying to put everything
together on the same night," said Kelsch.
Up next for the Lady Trojans are two tough and important district road
games. The squad travels to Southwestern on Tuesday night and wrap-up the
week cross town Friday night at Wayne County. Both games are on the schedule
as girls-boys doubleheaders.
"We certainly have our hands full this week against two very good
teams," said Kelsch.
