Wayne County hosted Monticello Friday night in a very important district
contest. The Cardinals were winless in the district entering the contest,
and Monticello's only district win had been over Wayne County in the
match-up earlier this season.
On Friday night, Wayne County used a tremendous second half effort to
break open a close game and come out with the 73-61 win. The contest was
much closer than the final score indicated.
Monticello junior point guard Sam Lair got his team on the scoreboard
first knocking down the 3-pointer. A basket by senior Phillip Inman gave the
Trojans the early 5-0 advantage.
Wayne County got on the scoreboard with a basket by sophomore point
guard Dustin Wells.
The Trojans got baskets from Zeb Davis, Travis Bell and Tyler Bell and a
3-pointer from Jerrett Sexton to push out to a 16-10 lead by the end of the
quarter.
Cardinal Jacob Gregory scored 6 points in the opening stanza to help
keep his team within striking distance.
The second quarter was a battle, as Wayne County outscored the Trojans
16-12 and pulled within 2 points, 28-26, at the half.
The Cardinals gained the lead in the third quarter, behind a tremendous
effort by Gregory and Robert Corder. Each scored 7 points in the stanza, as
Wayne County outscored Monticello 22-15, to lead 48-43 at the end of the
quarter.
"Jacob Gregory and Robert Corder had outstanding games and a lot of
other people made some big plays," said Wayne County Coach Rodney Woods.
The Cardinal coach referred to the play of the game as the put back by
W.K. Allen early in the fourth quarter, as the Trojans rallied. The two
teams continue to battle it out, but Wayne County put things out of reach in
the final couple of minutes of the game.
Offensively, Monticello was led by Inman with 18 points. He was 6 of 13
from the field and led Monticello's rebounding effort with 10. Lair and
Tyler Bell each scored 9 points in the contest.
Wayne County was led by Gregory and Corder who finished the game with 24
and 23 points respectively. Gregory was 4 of 11 on two-pointers and was 4 of
7 from behind the arc. Corder hit 4 of 6 from the floor and 12 of 19 from
the charity stripe. He also hit one 3-pointer in the contest.
For the game, Monticello hit 20 of 58 from the field for 34 percent.
Wayne County hit 20 of 54 for 37 percent.
The Cards were 5 of 16 from behind the arc for 31 percent, while the
Trojans were 6 of 16 for 37 percent. Neither team had a stellar night from
the charity stripe. Wayne County was 28 of 47 for 59 percent. Monticello was
15 of 32 for 46 percent.
"We had a poor night from the free throw line which made our night much
tougher than it should have been," commented Woods.
Wayne County won the battle of the boards, out rebounding the Trojans
58-38. The Trojans committed 3 fewer turnovers than Wayne County<21 for
Monticello compared to 24 for the Cards.
"We have been getting out rebounded by double digits and having 20 plus
turnovers which has spelled disaster. But in this game we still had 20 plus
turnovers but we out rebounded Monticello 58-38 which was huge," said Woods.
Gregory led Wayne County's effort on the boards with 14.
"Give our guys credit for continuing to battle," said Woods. "When you
are 3-11 it can become tough to be motivated but our team and coaches are
not going to stop trying to improve."
With the win, Wayne County improved to 3-11 on the season.
"We appear to be making progress but it is coming in small victories,"
said Woods. "We need to get much better much quicker."
With the loss, Monticello dropped to 3-11 on the season.
Next up for the Trojans was a game at Berea on Tuesday, January 17.
Wayne County traveled to McCreary Central on Tuesday for another
district game.
