The Monticello Lady Trojans met Wayne County last Friday night at
Cardinal Gym in the opening game of a boys-girls doubleheader. The Lady
Cards entered with an 11-4 record overall and 2-2 district tally.
Monticello entered with a 1-11 mark overall and 0-3 record in district
action. Both teams were looking to snap three game losing streaks.
The teams met earlier in the season with Wayne County claiming a 72-35
decision on December 12 at Monticello.
The Lady Cards ended the first half with a 17-0 run to claim a 37-11
halftime advantage and never looked back en route to rolling to a 75-22 home
win.
The freshman duo of Meg Latham and Heather Stearns led the winners with
a total of 42 points, as the winner improved to 12-4 on the season.
Latham finished 12 of 17 from the field to net a game high 24 points
with 5 rebounds and 3 blocks, in 25 minutes of play. Stearns, inserted into
the starting lineup, responded with 18 points, 10 boards and 5 steals.
Wayne County shot a near season best 48 percent from the field and
totaled a season high 23 assists.
"We had a good atmosphere with a super crowd and it was good to finally
get back on track and execute. To have 23 assists shows how active we were
on the offensive end," said Wayne County Coach Tim Pyles.
Senior forward Latoyia Green contributed 8 points with 6 assists and a
game high 11 rebounds, as Wayne claimed a 33-20 rebound edge. The freshman
reserve tandem of Emilee Burton and Kayla Jones finished with 8 and 7 points
respectively, as eight different Lady Cards scored in the win.
Monticello, which dropped to 1-12 overall and 0-4 in district play, was
plagued by poor shooting and 32 turnovers. The visitors shot just 20 percent
from the field and were led by the play of Britany Carrender.
Carrender, a senior guard, finished 2 of 12 from the field and 3 of 6
from the free throw line, to net a team high 9 points. The senior stalwart
added 3 assists, while logging a team high 28 minutes.
Sophomore forward Kayla West tallied 7 points, 3 rebounds and 3 steals.
West tallied on 3 of 5 shots from the field and 1 of 2 attempts from the
charity-stripe. Freshman Raven Frost contributed 4 points with 5 rebounds
and 2 steals, as only four Lady Trojans scored in the contest.
"We just have to go back to work. Once again we had too many turnovers
and just didn't make enough shots to get into any flow," said Monticello
Coach Marla Kelsch.
Wayne County opened 8 of 17 from the field and used the 8 points of Meg
Latham to build an 18-5 first quarter lead. The Lady Trojans countered with
2 of 9 shooting and were paced by the 3 points of Britany Carrender.
Three different Monticello players scored in the second stanza as the
visitors managed to close the gap to 20-11 with 3:48 left in the half. After
a Wayne County timeout, the hosts responded with a 17-0 run to push to a
37-11 halftime advantage.
"We had a good first quarter and then once again got complacent early in
the second quarter. We just struggle to handle a lead, but as a team we must
grow up and learn to execute regardless of the score," said Pyles.
Heather Stearns led all players with 10 points in the third frame, as
Wayne County used a 17-8 tilt to move to a 54-19 advantage.
The Lady Trojans placed three different scorers in the column in the
frame, paced by the 4 points of Britany Carrender.
Five different Lady Cards scored in the final period, as the hosts ended
the game on a 21-3 run to cruise to a 75-22 home win.
Kara Gothrup finished with 5 points and 4 assists, while Kayla Bowlin
added a game high 7 assists with 3 points. Courtney Duncan chipped-in with 2
points to round-out the Lady Cards in the scorebook.
Whitney Owens netted 2 points to round-out the Lady Trojans in the
scoring margin.
Wayne County finished 32 of 67 overall for 48 percent and converted on 4
of 13 3-pointers for 31 percent. The squad made 7 of 9 free throws for 78
percent and totaled 23 assists with 12 steals against 14 turnovers.
Monticello shot 8 of 40 overall for 20 percent and tallied on 2 of 9
3-pointers for 22 percent. The visitors tallied on 4 of 13 free throws for
31 percent and totaled 9 steals and 5 assists against 32 miscues.
Both teams returned to action this week as Wayne County hosts Casey
County on Friday night. The squad follows that up with a trip to Corbin on
Saturday to face Cawood in the Corbin Classic.
"I really think this team can win the district and region, but we have
to go back to work. We have to work hard on every trip during a game to get
better and our effort in practice must improve. We have a few days to get
back into the gym and polish up on our fundamentals before two big games,"
said Pyles.
The Lady Trojans also have a very big week as the squad opens play in
the 12th Region All-A Classic on Tuesday night. Monticello hosts Danville in
the opening round and the teams met earlier in the year with the Lady Ads
taking a close decision.
"We certainly are looking forward to the All-A and to get to host the
first game is always a plus. Danville is a team we were competitive with
early in the year, so hopefully we'll be ready to play against a good team,"
said Kelsch.
