Humane Society seeks information about burglary

The Humane Society of Wayne County is looking for help in the recovery

of several items taken from a storage unit off the Ray Dean Dishman Road in

the Missouri Hollow area. Officials said the break-in occurred sometime

between January 17 and January 20.

Someone apparently cut the lock on the building and took two large dog

cages, four medium cages and 10 cat carriers. Several horse bridges, bits

and reins were taken, as well as eight to 10 bags of dog food that was

stored in the building. All supplies were either donated by local

businesses, residents or Humane Society members.

Without the cages, the Humane Society will be hampered in the effort to

sponsor their next spay and neuter clinic. Humane Society officials have

asked that responsible parties please return the cages or put them somewhere

and call the local number so they can be picked up.

"We desperately need them for our next spay and neuter clinic to be held

on April 6," stated Debbie Walker, vice-president for the Humane Society.

"These clinics are done with all volunteer members and done to aid this

community. Animal care, just like human health care, is expensive."

Walker and other Humane Society members also have a request for others

in the community.

"We hope if anyone is offered any of the missing items at a good price

you will decline the offer," said Walker. "Furthermore, to the responsible

party or parties, you could not know how the Humane Society operates. A

simple phone call to us, if you had a need for dog food or use of a cage,

would have been sufficient. We would have been happy to assist you as we

have many people in this community who have had a stint with hard times or a

devastating loss of their home."

"While we do not feel this was done out of need for any of the stolen

items, we wanted to make sure everyone understands it doesn't take bolt

cutters and theft to get help from us," Walker stated. "We also want to

express that this act will not stop the progress and the mission of the

Wayne County Humane Society. We are used to cruelty, we see it every day.

Not a single one of us will ever accept it or throw our hands up and give up

the cause due to malicious act such as this."

Anyone who has information should contact the Humane Society at (606)

343-0096 or the Wayne County Sheriff's Department at (606) 348-5416.
