The Wayne County Lady Cardinals met 13th Region foe Cawood last Saturday
afternoon at Corbin High School Gym in the one day event billed as the
Corbin Showcase.
Wayne County, coming off a disappointing 60-47 home loss to Casey County
a day earlier, entered with a 12-5 record. Cawood owned an 8-6 record and
was just two days removed from an emotional 43-39 overtime win over Bell
County.
Wayne County sophomore guard Courtney Duncan nailed the game winning
hot, a 12 foot jumper, with under :05 to play at the Lady Cards claimed a
50-48 win. Duncan's basket capped-off an 11 point effort that included 4
rebounds and 3 assists, in just under 30 minutes of action.
"That was a big shot for Courtney and hopefully for our team. We've lost
several close ones lately, so maybe this will help our confidence in the
future. To beat a pretty good team on a neutral floor should give us a shot
of momentum heading into a very tough three game week," said Lady Cards
Coach Tim Pyles.
Freshman guard Heather Stearns, named the game's MVP, added a team high
14 points with 6 steals. Stearns finished 5 of 13 from the field, while
Latoyia Green netted 11 points as three Lady Cards reached double digits.
Green shot 4 of 9 from the field and grabbed a game high 12 rebounds with 3
steals, while logging 30 minutes of play.
"We're still struggling, but make no mistake this was a good tough win
for our team. Sometimes you just have to gut games out and this was one of
those games," said Pyles.
Kara Gothrup and Emilee Burton added 4 points each, while the duo of Meg
Latham and Kayla Jones contributed 3 points each. Gothrup added a game high
8 assists, as six different Lady Cards scored in the win.
Cawood, which dropped to 8-7, was led by the game high 18 points of
senior forward Sierra Wynn. Wynn shot 5 of 17 from the field and 8 of 9 from
the free throw line. Tiffany Brock and Rebecca Hatmaker added 9 points each,
as six different Lady Trojans scored in the game.
"Sierra Wynn is a big time scorer and knows how to play the game. We
played against her and her older sister Savannah a couple of years ago and
they certainly are explosive players on the offensive end. Cawood has a very
nice basketball team," said Pyles.
Wynn and Heather Stearns netted 7 points each in the opening quarter as
the teams battled to a 12-12 tie. Poor shooting plagued both squads in the
frame, as Wayne County made 4 of 15 shots and Cawood tallied on 3 of 13
attempts.
Latoyia Green nailed 2 3-pointers in the second period, as the Lady
Cards used a 13-8 run to push to a 25-20 halftime lead. Wayne County held
the lead, despite shooting only 29 percent from the field.
Four different Lady Cards scored in the third quarter, led by the 6
points of Stearns, as the squad used a 17-14 tilt to move to a 42-34
advantage. The Lady Trojans were able to stay close with the help of a 6 of
6 effort from the charity-stripe.
Wayne County ended the game just 2 of 9 from the field and 1 of 4 from
the free throw line, but that was enough as Courtney Duncan ended the Cawood
rally with a go-ahead basket with only 5 seconds left in the contest.
The Lady Trojans rallied with five different scorers in the final
quarter, but Wayne County held on to take a 50-48 win.
A review of the stats shows Cawood owned a 37-27 rebound advantage and
made 13 of 53 shots overall for 25 percent. The Lady Trojans connected on 1
of 12 3-pointers for 8 percent and marked on 21 of 27 free throws for 78
percent. The squad committed 23 turnovers with 5 steals and just 2 assists.
Wayne County shot 19 of 59 overall for 32 percent and tallied on 7 of 18
3-pointers for 39 percent. The winners made 5 of 13 free throws for 38
percent and totaled 15 assists with 12 steals against 18 turnovers.
Up next for the Lady Cards, now 13-5 on the season, is a very busy three
game week. The team hosts Rockcastle County on Tuesday night and Garrard
County on Thursday night, before ending the week on Friday night out of
region against Anderson County.
"We have to go back to work and try to get back to defending our home
court. We have two games against two of the better teams in our region and
we need to step up our intensity at home. After that we travel to a very
good opponent in Anderson County, so we certainly have our hands full," said
Pyles.
