Cardinals drop 65-41 loss at Corbin

The Wayne County Cardinals traveled to Corbin on Friday, January 20. The

Cards lost 65-41 against the 13th Region opponent.

The contest marked the 17th meeting between the two schools. Wayne

County leads the series 9-8. The last time Wayne County and Corbin played

was January 21, 2005, when Corbin won 76-71.

The Cards were playing Friday night without the services of starting

sophomore center Cody Decker, who was out with a foot injury.

"Not having Cody in this game really hurt," said Wayne County Coach

Rodney Woods. "Cody had his best practices of the year this week then was

unable to play so that was disappointing."

Wayne County kept it close early in the contest. The Cards trailed by

only 2, 10-8, at the first stop. But the Redhounds scored 19 points in the

second quarter, while holding Wayne County to only 8. The Cardinals shot

only 23 percent from the floor in the first half.

"Our shot selection was the poorest it has been all season," said Woods.

"We were 6 of 26 at the half with only two turnovers. That was a season low

for turnovers, but we shot so poorly we were never in it."

Corbin led 29-16 at the half.

In the third quarter, Wayne County put only 4 points on the scoreboard.

The Redhounds led 53-20 going into the final quarter.

"This was one of the worst basketball games I have seen a Wayne County

team play," said Woods. "We must grow up and be more mature in our

preparation for a game. You work on a game plan and practice the day before

a game then we go out and do not execute any of the things we've worked on."

Offensively, Wayne County was led by sophomore point guard Dustin Wells

who finished with 13 points. Wells was 3 of 5 from the field and 2 of 4 from

behind the arc. Wells also grabbed 5 steals in the game.

Jacob Gregory and W.K. Allen added 8 points each in the contest. Gregory

was 3 of 6 from the field. He also led Wayne County's rebounding effort with

8. Gregory had 2 assists in the contest.

For the game, Wayne County shot 28 percent from the field, hitting 14 of

49. They were 2 of 13 from behind the arc for 15 percent. From the free

throw line, Wayne County connected on 11 of 17 for 64 percent.

Corbin shot 44 percent for the game, hitting 30 of 67 from the field.

They were 2 of 7 from behind the arc for 50 percent. The Redhounds hit 3 of

6 from the charity stripe for 50 percent.

Corbin was led by Ryan Swim with 16 points. Kyle French scored 13 in the

win.

The Cards were out rebounded by Corbin 47-29. Wayne County committed 17

turnovers in the contest, compared to 15 by Corbin.

"A young team must learn what it takes to win and usually those games

come at home, then you have to learn how to win on the road," said Woods.

"We have no idea what it takes to win away from home."

With the loss, Wayne County dropped to 3-13 on the season. Corbin is now

11-6.

"We have to grow up and go back to work," said Woods. "We're a much

better team now than before Christmas but we still have a long way to go."
