The Monticello Lady Trojans met Danville, last Tuesday night at MHS Gym,
in the opening round of the 12th Region All-A Classic. The Lady Trojans
entered with a 1-12 record, while Danville owned a 3-6 mark. The teams met
earlier in the season, on December 5 with the Lady Ads claiming a 45-40 road
win. The winner of Tuesday night's contest would advance into a semifinals
match up with Harrodsburg.
Danville sophomore guard Tasha Milby scored a game high 17 points, all
in the second half, as the Lady Ads used an 18-2 third quarter run en route
to claiming a 50-38 tournament win. Milby tallied on 5 of 7 free throws and
added 6 two-point baskets, as the winners improved to 4-6 on the season.
"Danville did a really nice job of getting Milby open in the second
half. We played a triangle and two, which worked well in the first half, but
give Danville credit they adjusted and Milby is a real gamer. She just
refused to lose and really put them on her shoulders," said Monticello Coach
Marla Kelsch.
Sophomore guard Xerces Simpson added 10 points and Callie Harper netted
9 points, on 3 3-pointers, as seven different Lady Ads etched the scoring
column.
Monticello, which owned a 27-24 halftime lead, was done-in by an awful
third quarter. The hosts owned a 36-32 scoring advantage in the other three
periods, but couldn't overcome the decisive 18-2 run.
"I thought this was our best execution of a game plan all season, but we
just had too many turnovers and the third quarter killed us," said Kelsch.
The Lady Trojans, which dropped to 1-13, was led by the team high 9
points of senior guard Britany Carrender. Carrender finished 3 of 9 from the
field and 3 of 5 from the free throw line, plus contributed 7 assists in
just under 31 minutes of action.
Mary Beth Cooper totaled 8 points with a season high 10 rebounds, while
8th grader Whitney Owens netted a season high 8 points, as seven different
Lady Trojans scored in the game.
"I thought we came out and played with a lot of focus, especially in the
first half, but our turnovers hurt. We just have to learn to handle
pressure, I know when they turned up their pressure in the third quarter, we
just didn't respond," said Kelsch.
Raven Frost added a game high 11 rebounds with 6 points. Frost made 6 of
8 free throws, while Kayla West chipped-in with 4 points and 5 boards.
Danville's Callie Harper nailed two 3-pointers in the first frame, as
the Lady Ads pushed to a 12-11 lead. Monticello was able to stay close led
by the 7 points of Britany Carrender. Seven different Lady Trojans scored in
the second stanza, as the squad made 6 of 8 free throws and used a 16-12 run
to claim a 27-24 halftime advantage. The Lady Ads used a balanced approach
in the first half, as six different visitors marked the scoring tally.
Tasha Milby erased a scoreless first half with 9 third quarter points,
as Danville exploded with an 18-2 run, to take a 42-29 lead. Whitney Owens
provided the lone Monticello basket in the quarter.
"We didn't handle having a lead very well and give Danville credit,
their speed and defensive pressure really bothered us," said Kelsch.
Milby accounted for all 8 of Danville's points in the final period, as
the visitors held on for a 50-38 win. Mary Beth Cooper finished 4 of 8 from
the field and paced the Lady Trojans with 4 points in the final frame.
Leandra Brown finished with 2 points and Cortney Morrow tallied 1 point
and 3 rebounds, to round-out the Lady Trojans in the scoring column.
Danville finished with 17 two point baskets and 3 3- pointers in the
contest. The Lady Ads made 5 of 11 free throws for 45 percent and finished
with 14 turnovers.
Monticello countered with 14 of 39 shooting overall for 36 percent and
missed all 8 3-pointers attempted. The squad shot an improved 10 of 15 from
the foul-line for 67 percent and finished with 32 turnovers.
"Our free throw shooting was a real positive. On the season as a team we
are under 50 percent, so that was certainly better than usual. That's an
area if we can improve on will allow us to stay close and get into position
to win some games," said Kelsch.
Up next for the Lady Trojans is a Monday night home district contest
with Southwestern. The squad ends the week on Friday night, at Pulaski
County.
"Southwestern plays pressure man to man defense, so we'll have to take
care of the basketball. Pulaski County is rebuilding, but they looked pretty
solid when we played this summer," said Kelsch.
