Trojans lose at Berea 100-69

The Monticello Trojans knew that Tuesday night's match-up with Berea

would be a challenge.

The Pirates, 10-6 on the season, had been putting a lot of points on the

board in recent outings, including one contest where the team broke the

century mark.

The Trojan defense, without the services of several players, stood tough

early in the contest, but Berea put together another great offensive show to

take a 100-69 win.

Monticello's starting lineup looked a little different for this game,

and included eighth grader Derrick Peyton, who had just come off a 15-point

junior varsity performance.

Also starting for Monticello was sophomore Tyler Bell and seniors Philip

Inman, Lance Garrett and Zeb Davis.

The Trojans got off to a quick start and held the early lead. Monticello

pushed the pace of the game, and the first quarter was like a shoot-out

between the two teams. At the first stop Berea led 27-19.

Bell put together a good first quarter effort, leading Monticello with 6

points and several assists.

In the second quarter, Monticello had to go to the bench as several key

players had to sit with foul troubles. Reserves Trevor McFarland, Tyler

Duncan, Axil Atkinson and Danny Hicks all played a lot of minutes in the

quarter, as Monticello scored 19 points in the second quarter.

The team also drew inspiration from the gritty performance by Luke

Burton, who has seen limited action because of a knee injury.

Burton was not expected to contribute more than a couple of minutes in

the game, but played most of the second quarter. He came up with several key

plays, including a steal, a couple of rebounds and an assist.

However, Berea's offense didn't seem to suffer in the second quarter, as

they built a 13-point lead, 51-38, by halftime.

Foul problems continued to plague Monticello in the second half. The

Trojans lost Bell, their starting point guard, in the third quarter. Bell

scored 6 points on layups before taking a seat. Duncan and Atkinson stepped

in and gave some quality minutes at the point.

Davis hit two 3-pointers and Monticello scored 22 points in the third

quarter. Berea led 84-60 at the end of the quarter.

Four Monticello players went to the bench in the final stanza, and the

Trojans struggled offensively, scoring only 8 points in the last 8 minutes

of the game.

The Trojans were led by Inman with 19 points. Davis finished with 15

points. Also in double figures was Bell with 13 and Peyton with 11.

Despite the loss, the Monticello coaching staff saw several bright spots

in this contest, including Peyton's career high varsity scoring night. Hicks

gave the Trojans several big minutes in this game as well.

The coaches were pleased with performances from several of the younger

players who stepped up into varsity roles in this game.

With the loss, Monticello dropped to 3-12 on the season.

Monticello played Burgin on Tuesday in the opening round of the All A

12th Region Tournament.
