Number of political candidates reaches 72

The number of candidates that will appear on the May primary ballot
climbed to 72 on Monday, as the filing deadline approached. Several
candidates have filed for magisterial and constable races this year and
County Court Clerk Carol Jones said that she expected more candidates to
file before Tuesday's 4 p.m. deadline.
"I anticipate that we will have a few more candidates before the
deadline," said Jones on Monday.
There was a large number of candidates who filed in November and since
then it has been fairly steady. Things seemed to pick up Monday, as the
deadline loomed the next day.
The race for Magistrate District Two has three more candidates.
Republicans Peggy Guffey and Hershel Pyles and democrat Don Gregory have
filed for the seat.
Four additional candidates have filed for Magistrate District Four,
including Micah Morrow, Lisa Bates Perkins, Jason Coffey and James "Butch"
Turner, all republicans.
Thomas "Pooch" Young, a republican, has filed as a candidate for
Magistrate District One.
Two more candidates have filed for Constable District One. They include
Ronnie Rigney, a democrat, and William B. Wallace, a republican.
Thomas Ferrell, a republican, has filed as a candidate for Constable
District Two.
Two more candidates have filed for Constable District Three. They are
Fred Maulden and James Nevels, both republicans.
Jones noted that every primary race so far has a candidate except for
the office of County Surveyor. This year's large slate of candidates may be
a record for a local election. In the last local election, there were 50
candidates on the ballot.
Candidates will draw for positions on the primary ballot later this
week. The drawing will be held Thursday, February 2 at 2 p.m. in the large
courtroom upstairs in the courthouse.
Not only are the candidates gearing up for May, it looks like the voters
of Wayne County are as well. There was a drive late in 2005 to get voters
registered, and Jones reported that has resulted in some changes in party
numbers. From November to December, the Republican party saw an increase of
198 registrants in Wayne County.
Jones noted that includes new registrations, as well as those who
changed parties before the December 31 deadline. She said she does not have
final numbers of voters who changed their party affiliation.
Jones said that the Democratic numbers were down by 82 in that same
period.
