Local residents will have the opportunity to give members of C Battery a
heroes' welcome on Sunday, February 5. That's when a Homecoming Parade for
the local National Guard unit it planned.
C Battery arrived back home on Saturday, January 21. Members of the unit
traveled home separately with family and friends, so the parade will give
the community a chance to welcome the whole unit together.
The Monticello-Wayne County Chamber of Commerce is coordinating the
parade, which is set to begin at 2 p.m. on Main Street at the intersection
with Hardwood Drive. The procession will continue along Main Street to the
Wayne County High School gymnasium.
There have already been some float entries for the parade, according to
Penny Thompson, with the Chamber of Commerce. Thompson expects at least four
to six floats to participate in the parade.
There is no registration fee to be a part of the parade, but every
participant must register with the Chamber of Commerce by Friday, February 3
to be involved. There will be no walkers, no marchers, and no horses in the
parade.
Currently, Thompson said the Chamber is recruiting people with yellow
vehicles to participate. Plans are to lead the procession with a line of
yellow vehicles. Anyone who would like to be part of the procession should
contact Thompson at the Chamber Office at (606) 348-3064 or e-mail her at
info@monticellokychamber.com.
Thompson said there has been a lot of interest in the homecoming parade,
and her office has received a lot of calls from people who wanted more
information about the events.
After the parade, a special community service is planned at the gym for
about 3:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to come out for this event.
Also on February 5, the Family Support Group for C Battery has planned a
special evening for soldiers and their families. There will be a catered
meal and that will be followed by a Super Bowl party. A big screen
television will be brought in so they can watch the game.
Local businesses and residents who have displayed yellow ribbons and
welcome home signs are encouraged to leave those up for the parade.
