Trojans win tourney opener against Burgin

The Monticello Trojans traveled to Burgin High School on Tuesday,

January 24 for opening round action in the All A 12th Region Tournament.

Monticello took a 65-48 win to earn a trip to the semifinal round of the

tourney.

While the contest was an extremely important one, Monticello didn't

come out with the intensity that comes with regional tournament play. But

the Trojans did show toughness in the opening quarter, and hustle on the

offensive boards.

Monticello was sparked by the early play of eighth grader Derrick

Peyton, who has showed tremendous improvement as a varsity contributor.

Peyton, who finished with 16 points and 15 rebounds, scored 5 points in the

opening quarter and grabbed some key offensive boards.

The Trojans had trouble pulling away from Burgin, which has one of its

most competitive teams in recent years. Burgin seesawed into the lead late

in the second quarter. But Trojan senior Phillip Inman made a long 3-pointer

from near mid-court to give Monticello the 32-30 lead at intermission.

"In the second half, we made the commitment to defense and began to play

basketball like we were in a regional tournament," stated Monticello Coach

Gary Abbott.

The stingy Trojan defense allowed Burgin to score only 8 points in the

third quarter. Monticello scored 14 points in the stanza to take a 46-38

advantage into the final eight minutes.

In the final quarter, Monticello did a lot of things right, like boxing

out and making free throws down the stretch to assure the win.

Inman got a lot of touches in the final quarter, scoring 10 of his

game-high 25 points. Inman went 4 for 5 from the free throw in the fourth

quarter. Inman also had 14 rebounds in the contest for Monticello.

Senior guard Justin Branscum, who finished with 9 points, was 4-4 from

the line in the fourth quarter. Rounding out scoring for Monticello were:

Tyler Bell, 7; Zeb Davis, 5; Luke Burton, 2; and Lance Garrett, 1.

With the win, Monticello improved to 5-12 on the season. They moved into

the semifinal round of the All A 12th Region Tournament against a tough

Harrodsburg team. The contest was played on Thursday night.
