Lady Cardinals win at Anderson County 42-34
Shannon Hutchinson
Sports Writer

The Wayne County Lady Cardinals met Anderson County last Friday night at

ACHS Gym. The Lady Cards entered their third game of the week with a 15-5

record and were coming off an impressive 58-36 home win over Garrard County

one night earlier. The Lady Bearcats, out of the 8th Region, entered the

contest with a respectable 11-8 overall mark.

Wayne County senior forward Latoyia Green scored a team high 10 points

and grabbed 9 rebounds, while playing the entire 32 minutes, as the Lady

Cars battled to a 42-34 road win. Green finished 4 of 5 from the field and 2

of 4 from the free throw line, as six different Lady Cards scored in the

win.

The Lady Cards entered the contest short-handed, as sophomore starter

Courtney Duncan was sick and unable to play.

"I was proud of the way our kids battled and never allowed fatigue to

set in. We certainly were short-handed without Courtney, but I was very

pleased with the way all of our bench stepped up to provide valuable

minutes," said Wayne County Coach Tim Pyles.

The freshman duo of Meg Latham and Heather Stearns added solid efforts

in the win. Latham made 3 of 4 free throws and 3 of 11 field goal attempts

to tally 9 points with a game high 11 rebounds. Stearns shot 3 of 12 from

the floor and tallied on 2 of 3 free throws to net 9 points with 5 rebounds

and 3 steals, as Wayne County notched their fourth straight win on the

season.

"This wasn't a very pretty win, but I liked our team's toughness and the

way we competed late. I really thought we would get tired, but we actually

played better later in the game," said Pyles.

Freshman guard Kayla Jones responded to her first start of the season

with 5 points and 3 rebounds in 30 minutes of play. Kara Gothrup logged just

under 32 minutes and totaled 6 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds with 3 steals.

Anderson County, which dropped to 11-9, was led by the game high 14

points of freshman guard Ashley Rice. Rice finished 5 of 16 from the field,

while Courtney Milam added 9 points, as just four Lady Bearcats scored in

the contest.

"Anderson County has a very strong and physical team. They remind you of

a mountain type team kind of like Clay County with their physical play. Rice

is a good young player as well," said Pyles.

Defense dominated the first quarter as Anderson County made only 3 of

13 field goal attempts, but still claimed a 9-8 lead. The Lady Cards opened

a dismal 2 of 11 from the field, but converted on 4 of 5 free throws.

Four different Lady Cards scored in the second stanza, led by the 6

points of Latoyia Green, as the visitors used a 12-8 run to take a 20-17

halftime lead. Wayne County owned the lead, despite shooting just 30 percent

from the field in the half.

The teams battled to a 9-9 draw in the third quarter, as Wayne County

remained cold from the field, but held a 29-26 lead after three frames.

Anderson County attempted to rally in the fourth quarter, paced by the 5

points of Lindsey Fultz, but it wasn't enough.

Wayne County made 8 of 13 free throws down the stretch, including 3 of 5

from Kara Gothrup, as the locals claimed a 42-34 win.

"Against Rockcastle and Anderson County we stepped up and made some big

free throws. I really thought Kara stepped up and hit some big ones, which

was a big key," said Pyles.

Freshman Emilee Burton totaled 3 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists, while

the duo of Kayla Bowlin and Rachel Coffey added valuable minutes in reserve.

"I was very pleased with the way Kayla Jones stepped into the starting

lineup, but I was also very proud of the minutes Emilee, Kayla and Rachel

provided. Those three stepped in and really gave valuable minutes," said

Pyles.

Anderson County shot 14 of 48 overall for 29 percent and made 3 of 15

3-pointers for 20 percent. The Lady Bearcats converted on 3 of 8 free throws

for 37 percent and totaled 7 assists with 6 steals against 15 turnovers.

The Lady Cards owned a 33-22 rebound advantage and finished 13 of 43

overall for 30 percent. The squad made 1 of 8 3-pointers for 12 percent and

connected on 15 of 24 free throws for 62 percent. The winners totaled 12

steals and 9 assists against 17 turnovers.

The win concluded a very successful three game week for Wayne County, as

the team improved to 16-5 on the season.

"This was a very good week for our basketball team and I like the way we

responded to some very close games. We have to go back to work and prepare

for the #1 team in our region in Mercer County. Mercer is the real deal and

at this point everyone is trying to catch them," said Pyles.

The Lady Cards will host Mercer County on Friday night at Cardinal Gym.
