Wayne County hosted Rockcastle County on Tuesday, January 24. The Cards

rallied in the second half of the game, but dropped a 56-47 loss to the

Rockets.

This game marked the sixth meeting between the two schools, and it

marked the first time that Wayne County has ever lost to Rockcastle County.

The Cards had won all previous five meetings. The last time the two teams

played was December 26, 1989, when Wayne County won 71-60.

Tuesday's game was the second part of a boys-girls doubleheader, and a

large crowd of fans filled Cardinal gym to watch the basketball action.

"I want to thank our fans for their unbelievable support," said Wayne

County Coach Rodney Woods. "What a great crowd we had Tuesday night, with

Kentucky on television and also at the same time. We have the greatest fans

in high school basketball. They want us to win so badly and I really feel

sorry for them having to watch the kind of basketball we play."

The Rockets dominated the opening half, taking the early advantage and

building a double digit lead by halftime. Rockcastle County was up 17-9 at

the end of the first quarter. They led 28-17 at the half.

The Cardinals put together an improved second half of basketball. They

began to trim Rockcastle County's lead in the third quarter. Wayne County

scored 17 points to cut the Rockets lead to only 7, 41-34, going into the

final quarter.

The Cards made another run at Rockcastle County in the fourth quarter,

but couldn't get any closer than 5 points. The Rockets took the 9 point win.

"We did some things better in the second half," noted Woods. "Cody

Decker really got on the boards. Jacob Gregory made some nice moves. Gavin

made some really good drives and Ronnie Ellis shot it better. But still

overall it was a pretty poor performance."

The Cards were paced by Jacob Gregory with 12 points and Ronnie Ellis

with 10 points. For the game, Wayne County shot 16 of 45 from the floor for

35 percent. They were 6 of 18 for 33 percent from behind the arc. The Cards

shot 9 of 14 from the charity stripe for 64 percent.

Rockcastle County was led offensively by Kyle Mullins with 16 points.

Coty Childers scored 12 points.

The Rockets shot 42 percent from the floor, hitting 22 of 52. They were

3 of 10 from behind the arc for 30 percent. Rockcastle County hit 9 of 15

from the free throw line for 60 percent.

Wayne County grabbed 33 rebounds compared to 34 for Rockcastle County.

The Cards committed 12 turnovers, while the Rockets had only 9.

Cody Decker led the Cards in rebounding with 11. He also had 3 blocked

shots. Dustin Wells had the only steal of the game for Wayne County.

"It's hard to believe that we can play a whole game and only get one

steal," said Woods.

With the loss, Wayne County dropped to 3-14 overall. Rockcastle County

improved to 11-8.

"I hope, and believe they will, our fans stick with us," said Woods. "We

are going to get back to Wayne County basketball. It may not be this season

but this coaching staff will not quit until this thing is straightened out."

Up next for the Cards was a Friday night contest at Boyle County.
