The Monticello Lady Trojans hosted district foe Southwestern, last
Monday night at MHS Gym. The Lady Trojans entered with a 1-13 mark overall
and 0-4 tally in district play. Southwestern, one of the top teams in the
12th Region, owned an 11-6 mark overall and perfect 3-0 record in league
play. The teams met two weeks earlier with the Lady Warriors claiming a
61-30 home win.
Southwestern opened up a close game early in the third quarter and ended
the game on a 41-15 run, en route to claiming a 74-41 win. Chasidy
Zimmerman, a 5-9 junior forward, scored 14 of her game high 18 points in the
second half, to pace three winners in double digits.
The junior tandem of Jasi Flynn and Jessica Girdler added 14 and 11
points each, as 10 different Lady Warriors etched the scoring column.
"Southwestern has the total package as a team. They have a good inside
game and shoot the ball well from the outside, plus they really play good
defense," said Monticello head coach Marla Kelsch.
Monticello, which dropped to 1-14, was able to stay close for a while
led by Britany Carrender. Carrender, a 5-2 senior guard, netted a team high
16 points with 3 steals and assists, in 30 minutes of action. The senior
stalwart finished 3 of 13 overall from the field and tallied on 7 of 10 free
throws.
Whitney Owens and Mary Beth Cooper netted 6 points each in the contest.
Owens shot 3 of 12 from the field and totaled 6 rebounds, while Cooper
grabbed 5 boards.
Cooper, a 5-9 sophomore forward, shot 2 of 4 from the field and a
perfect 2 of 2 from the free throw line as the Lady Trojans made a season
best 16 of 22 from the charity-stripe for 73 percent.
"Our free throw shooting was a positive and I think that starts with
confidence. We make 30 of 40 in practice, but in game situations we've
struggled so I guess that goes back to being mentally focused. That's an
area we certainly want to build on and that's our second straight good night
from the line," said Kelsch.
Freshman reserve Leandra Brown totaled 3 points and a trio of hosts
netted 2 points each, as eight different Lady Trojans scored in the game.
Six different Lady Warriors scored in the opening frame, paced by the 6
points of Jasi Flynn, as the visitors pushed to a 21-4 lead.
"We set the tone early in the game. We opened the game off the tip and
missed two easy shots and then allowed them four offensive rebounds on their
first trip. We have to come out and find a way not to dig such a big hole to
start games," said Kelsch.
Southwestern pushed to a 29-7 lead mid-way through the second stanza,
before Monticello and Britany Carrender answered with a 15-4 run of their
own. Carrender nailed three 3-pointers during the run and totaled 12 points
in the quarter, as Monticello cut the Lady Warriors advantage to 33-22 at
halftime.
"They didn't push as much in the second quarter and to our kids credit
they battled back, plus Britany hit some big threes," said Kelsch.
Monticello opened the third period on a 4-0 tilt and closed the gap to
33-26, but after that it was all Southwestern. The Lady Warriors, paced by
the 8 points of Chasidy Zimmerman, responded with a 24-8 run to push a 57-34
lead. Four different Lady Trojans scored in the frame, led by the 6 points
of Mary Beth Cooper.
Katisha Morris scored all 6 of her points in the closing minutes, as
Southwestern used a 17-7 edge to roll a 74-41 win.
Brittney Crabtree, Lacey Alley and Raven Frost all contributed 2 points
each, to round-out the Lady Trojans in the scorebook.
A review of the stats show Southwestern made 22 two-point baskets and 7
3-pointers. The winners tallied on 9 of 14 free throws for 64 percent.
Monticello shot 11 of 46 overall for 24 percent and tallied on 3 of 19
3-pointers for 16 percent. The squad made 16 of 22 free throws for 73
percent and totaled 28 rebounds, 9 steals with 9 assists against 26
turnovers.
"We have to do a better job of handling pressure in game situations. We
have a very young team, but we have to do a better job of taking our
practice habits into game situations and making the plays," said Kelsch.
Up next for Monticello was a Fridday night road trip to 12th Region
rival Pulaski County.
