The Wayne County Cardinals played at Knox Central on Friday, February 3.
Knox Central improved to 5-15 on the season, as they defeated Wayne County
69-63.
The game marked the 17th meeting between the two schools. Wayne County
leads the series 13-4. The two teams last met on February 4, 2005 with Wayne
County taking an 86-51 win.
In last Friday night's contest, the Cards once again had trouble getting
things going. They trailed Knox Central 17-3 early, and trailed by 12 (17-5)
at the end of the first quarter.
"Once again we got ourselves off to a slow start and really dug
ourselves a hole," said Cardinal Coach Rodney Woods. "We are really shooting
the ball poorly early in the game, especially on the road."
Wayne County showed some signs of life in the second quarter, cutting
Knox Central's lead to 4 late in the quarter.
"We battled our way in the game at 25-21 then turned it over a couple of
times to go down by 10 at halftime," said Woods.
Wayne County trailed 33-23 at the intermission. The Cards cut into Knox
Central's advantage in the third quarter. Wayne County trailed 49-43 going
into the final eight minutes.
"We made a little run in the fourth quarter, and we were down 65-62 but
just couldn't finish the deal," said Woods.
Knox Central finished the game with a 4-1 run to earn the win.
Offensively the Cards were led by sophomore point guard Dustin Wells
with 20 points.
Wells was 3 of 6 from behind the arc and shot 4 of 6 from 2-point range.
He was 3 of 3 from the charity stripe. Wells had 5 assists and 3 steals in
the game.
"Dustin Wells continues to be our most consistent play," said Woods.
Jacob Gregory scored 17 points in the contest. He was 5 of 7 on
3-pointers and grabbed 6 rebounds for the Cards.
"It was good to see Jacob make some shots," said Woods. "He had been in
a slump for about three games."
Woods was also pleased to see improvement from Robert Corder, who
finished with 9 points. Corder shot 4 of 5 from the floor on the evening and
also had 3 steals in the game.
"Robert really played well after having about four straight poor
performances," said Woods.
For the game, Wayne County shot 39 percent from the field, hitting 24 of
61. They were 9 of 25 on 3-pointers for 36 percent. They were 6 of 9 from
the free throw line for 66 percent.
Knox Central shot 50 percent from the field, hitting 26 of 51. They were
2 of 17 from beyond the arc for 11 percent. The Panthers made a lot more
trips to the free throw line, hitting 15 of 20 for 75 percent.
Knox Central outrebounded Wayne County 38-28 in the game. Turnovers were
nearly even. Wayne County had 13 and Knox Central had 15. With the loss,
Wayne County dropped to 3-17 on the season.
"We have some people who need to start producing and some who need to
become consistent," said Woods. "We just have to keep our heads up even
though it is tough to do and go back to work. The season isn't over yet and
we need to do something we can hang our hat on for this year."
Up next for the Cards was a Tuesday night game at Southwestern.
