Trojans fall in All-A semifinals to Harrodsburg

The Monticello Trojans traveled to Harrodsburg on Thursday, January 26

to compete in the semifinals of the All A 12th Region Tournament.

Harrodsburg came out with the 94-91 win in what turned out to be a shootout.

The Trojans had advanced to the semifinals after defeating Burgin in the

opening round, and they seemed ready to make a run at the regional title, as

they prepared for the game with Harrodsburg.

But it was the Hogs that had the early intensity, as they scored four

straight baskets to start the game. Trojan Coach Gary Abbott called a quick

timeout to stop the run and to fire up his team's defense.

Monticello showed the first signs of life with a steal by senior guard

Justin Branscum. Branscum was fouled on the layup attempt and hit 1 of 2

free throws to get Monticello on the scoreboard.

Both teams pushed the pace of the game throughout the first quarter.

Harrodsburg's offense continued to flourish as they took a 30-16 lead at the

end of the quarter.

The Trojans scored 33 points in the second quarter, while holding

Harrodsburg to only 18 points. Senior Phillip Inman scored 12 of his

game-high 33 points in the second quarter to pace the Trojans.

"Phillip could be seen everywhere, posting up, catching the lobs and

even burying a deep 3-pointer," said MHS Coach Gary Abbott.

The Trojans also got spark from senior Zeb Davis who buried two

3-pointers in the quarter to help with the comeback effort. At the half,

Monticello led 49-48.

Despite the great second quarter effort, Monticello came out flat in the

third quarter. The Trojans scored only 14 points in the quarter, while

Harrodsburg scored 23. The Hogs led 71-63.

Inman scored 11 points in the final quarter, as the Trojans rallied

back. Tyler Bell hit a clutch 3-pointer and Derrick Peyton had 6 points in

the stanza.

The Trojan coaching staff pointed out several questionable calls during

the final minutes of the game that hindered Monticello's rally.

Harrodsburg led by 3 points with 3 seconds left in the game, but turned

it over on the inbounds. Monticello was unable to get the shot off and

Harrodsburg came up with the steal to claim the win.

Abbott said he would like to see the squad box out better defensively,

as well as go to the boards stronger. He noted that the team allowed

Harrodsburg several offensive rebounds in the contest.

"Another key to becoming a winning team will be our commitment to making

free throws," said Abbott. "We missed 5 free throws alone in the deciding

fourth quarter."

For the game, Monticello hit 23 of 40 from the free throw line for 58

percent.

Offensively, the Trojans were led by Inman with 33 points. Branscum

scored 15 points and Peyton finished with 13.

Harrodsburg, 6-13, advanced to the All A 12th Region championship game,

where they were defeated by Somerset High School.

With the loss, Monticello dropped to 5-13.

Next up for Monticello was a Tuesday night contest against Clinton

County.
