The Wayne County Lady Cardinals met 13th Region foe Corbin, last Friday
night at Corbin Gym, in a match up of two of the higher ranked teams in the
area. Wayne County was coming off a 49-42 loss at Southwestern and owned a
16-7 record. The Lady Hounds, ranked in the top 25 in various polls across
the state, owned an impressive 22-1 mark.
Wayne County won three of four quarters and tied the other one, en route
to claiming an impressive 59-51 road win. Freshman guard Heather Stearns
paced three Lady Cards in double figures with a team high 17 points, plus
grabbed 6 rebounds with 3 assists. Stearns finished 7 of 7 from the free
throw line and 4 of 12 overall from the field, in 28 minutes of action.
Meg Latham shot 8 of 14 from the field and added 16 points with 6
rebounds and two steals. Latoyia Green connected on 3 of 5 3-pointers and 4
of 7 free throws to tally 13 points with a game high 8 boards, in over
31-minutes of play.
"Certainly this was a good win against a very good opponent on the road
for our team. We shot the ball pretty well and rebounded well, but the big
key is when we shoot the ball well good things happen," said Wayne County
Coach Tim Pyles.
The Lady Cards shot a season high 7 of 11 from 3-point range, a fact not
lost on the coach.
"We did some very good things on the defensive balance and the way we
were able to get some good looks. Meg scored some big buckets early, which
allowed Latoyia to hit some clutch threes, plus Kara's penetration allowed
Heather and others to make some big shots. This was a very good effort,"
said Pyles.
Kayla Jones, starting for the sidelined Courtney Duncan, totaled 6
points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Kayla Bowlin netted 5 points with 3
assists, while Kara Gothrup contributed 5 assists, as Wayne County finished
with 17 assists.
Corbin which lost for the first since late December, dropped to 22-2
despite the big effort of Heather Clouse. Clouse finished 9 of 9 from the
free throw line and 5 of 16 from the field to net a game high 19 points.
Brittany Jackson and Christina Sutton tallied 10 points each, as five
different Lady Redhounds scored in the contest.
"Corbin has a very nice team. After such a tough loss at Southwestern, I
was so proud of the way we came out and played with intensity. Anytime you
beat a good team, it should give us confidence and momentum," said Pyles.
The Wayne County tandem of Latham and Stearns combined for 11 points in
the opening period, as the Lady Cards claimed an 11-10 first quarter lead.
Corbin stayed close with the help of 4 of 8 shooting from the field.
Latoyia Green made three 3-pointers in the second stanza to tally 9
points and an Emilee Burton bucket just before the horn, gave Wayne County a
30-29 halftime lead. The Lady Cards made 8 of 12 shots in the period, as the
teams battled to a 19-19 draw.
"Latoyia hit some big shots and I thought Emilee's shot at the end of
the half gave us the lead and momentum," said Pyles.
Heather Stearns netted 10 points in the second half, including 5 in the
third frame, as Wayne County used a 12-6 run to take a 42-35 lead. The Lady
Hounds struggled on the offensive end and connected on just 3 of 12 field
goal attempts, while the visitors made 4 of 13 attempts.
Kayla Jones scored all 6 of her points in the final 8-minutes, as the
Lady Cards made 10 of 16 free throws to steal a 59-51 win. Corbin's Heather
Clouse led all players with 8 points in the period, but it wasn't enough as
Wayne County ended the game with a 17-16 edge.
Emilee Burton finished with 2 points, to round-out the six different
Lady Cards in the scoring column.
Wayne County, which claimed a 28-20 rebound advantage, shot 20 of 44
overall for 45 percent and made 7 of 11 3-pointers for 63 percent. The squad
converted on 12 of 20 free throws for 60 percent and totaled 10 steals
against 21 turnovers.
Corbin finished 20 of 54 overall for 37 percent and tallied on of 7
3-pointers for 8 percent. The hosts shot a perfect 9 of 9 from the
charity-stripe for 100 percent and totaled 12 steals with 6 assists against
17 turnovers.
Up next for the Lady Cards, now 17-7 on the season, is a Tuesday night
home date with 12th Region rival Somerset. The squad ends the week on Friday
night on the road at West Jessamine. Both games are scheduled as traditional
boys-girls doubleheaders.
