North Laurel tops Monticello Lady Trojans 71-47
The Monticello Lady Trojans traveled to London last Monday night, to
face home standing 13th Region foe North Laurel. The Lady Trojans entered
with a 1-17 record, while the Lady Jags owned a 9-12 mark. The contest
marked the first meeting of the season between the two schools.
North Laurel forward Casey Karr netted 16 of her game high 22 points, in
the decisive second half, as the Lady Jags used a 40-21 run en route to
taking a 71-47 home win. Karr tallied 3 3-point shots and 6 field goals
overall, plus converted on 4 of 7 free throws, as North improved to 10-12 on
the season.
Catie Jackson and Kayla Bargo added 11 points each, as nine different
Lady Jags scored in the win. North Laurel made the most of 19 offensive
rebounds, which led to 18 points.
"I thought we played pretty well in the first half, but the third
quarter just killed us. We made some big shots, but they really pounded us
on the offensive glass. We gave up way too many second chance points, plus
our turnovers hurt again," said Monticello Coach Marla Kelsch.
Monticello, which dropped to 1-18, was led by the play of senior guard
Britany Carrender totaled a team high 16 points with 6 rebounds and 5
assists. The senior stalwart connected on 4 of 6 3-pointers and 5 of 10
shots overall, plus tallied on 2 of 4 free throws in 26 minutes of action.
"Britany made some big threes which helped us get off to a pretty good
start," said Kelsch.
The sophomore reserve tandem of Kayla West and Tela Casada added solid
efforts in the loss. West totaled 7 points and 2 blocks, while Casada netted
6 points with 4 boards.
"Both Kayla and Tela played pretty well. Kayla played in the junior
varsity game and I think that helped her in the varsity game, while Tela has
been giving us some solid minutes off the bench," said Kelsch.
Mary Beth Cooper and Whitney Owens contributed 5 points each and Cooper
totaled 6 rebounds, as nine different Lady Trojans scored in the contest.
The teams battled on near-even terms in the opening quarter, as North
Laurel's Bobbie Jo Harris tallied all 8 of her points in the frame, as North
claimed a 15-14 lead. Monticello was able to stay close, as five different
Lady Trojans scored in the period.
Britany Carrender led all players with 12 points in the first half, but
it wasn't enough as the Lady Jags used a 16-13 second stanza to take a 31-26
halftime advantage.
"We shot the ball pretty well, especially in the first half. I thought
we played one of our better halves of the season. We really came out of the
locker room ready to play. I just wish we could've done something in the
third quarter," said Kelsch.
Five different Lady Jags scored in the third frame, as the hosts used a
24-11 run to push to a 55-37 lead. Cortney Morrow totaled all 3 of her
points in the period, as five different Monticello players etched the
scoring margin.
Casey Karr finished with 10 points in the final 8-minutes, as North
Laurel ended the game on a 16-10 run to claim a 71-47 win.
The Lady Trojans added two 3-pointers in the period and finished with a
season high 7 treys in the loss. Raven Frost finished with 2 points and
Britany Crabtree tallied 2 points with 3 assists and 2 boards. Chelsea
Humble scored 1 point, to round-out the Lady Trojans in the score book.
North Laurel, which claimed a 27-23 rebound advantage, totaled 23
2-point baskets and 5 3-pointers. The Lady Jags made 7 of 11 free throws for
64 percent.
The Lady Trojans shot 15 of 34 overall for 44 percent and connected on 7
of 12 3-pointers for 58 percent. The squad made 10 of 16 free throws for 62
percent and totaled 14 assists against 27 turnovers.
Monticello's game at Berea on Friday night was canceled, due to the
weather and will be made up either this week or next week.
The squad returns to action this week with a home game on Tuesday night
against region rival Harrodsburg and ends the week on Friday at Burgin.
"I think we have two games on the schedule this week that are very
winnable. We just have to keep working and try to put four quarters
together. Hopefully we'll continue to shoot the ball well and try to take
better care of the basketball," said Kelsch.
