The Wayne County Cardinals hosted Madison Central on Friday, February

10. The game marked the ninth meeting between the two schools. Madison

Central leads the series 6-3. The last time the two teams played was

February 13, 2005, when Madison Central won 76-60.

On Friday night, Wayne County had trouble getting their offense going on

the way to a 66-46 loss to the Indians. Central built up a first quarter

double digit advantage and the Cards never really got into the game.

"Madison Central is a very fine basketball team," said Wayne County

Coach Rodney Woods. "We knew going in that we had a huge challenge in front

of us."

The challenge became apparent quickly, as Madison Central jumped out to

a 17-6 lead.

"Once again we dug ourselves a huge hole early by not shooting the ball

well," said Woods. "We could cover up a lot of our deficiencies by making

some shots."

Madison Central scored 20 points in the second quarter, compared to 15

points by the Cards. The Indians led 37-21 at the half.

The Cardinals scored 13 points in the second quarter, but couldn't cut

into Madison Central's advantage. Wayne County trailed 56-34 going into the

final quarter.

Offensively the Cards were led by Jacob Gregory with 17 points. Gregory

hit 4 of 6 from behind the arc in the contest. He also had 5 rebounds and 2

assists.

Robert Corder was also in double figures with 11 points. He was 4 of 5

from the field in the contest, grabbed 5 rebounds and also had 2 assists.

"Jacob Gregory had one of his better offensive performances and Robert

Corder played well," said Woods.

Ronnie Ellis scored 10 points. He also had 6 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1

steal. Cardinal guard Dustin Wells scored only 4 points in the contest, well

below his average of 12.

"Dustin Wells handled their excellent pressure by only turning the ball

over one time and it took its toll on his offense," said Woods.

For the game, Wayne County shot 32 percent from the field, hitting 16 of

50. They were 6 of 15 from behind the arc for 40 percent. From the charity

stripe the Cards were 8 of 14 for 57 percent.

Madison Central hit 25 of 70 from the floor for 35 percent. They were 4

of 15 from the behind the arc for 26 percent. The Indians hit 12 of 25 from

the free throw line for 48 percent.

Madison Central had 48 rebounds in the contest, compared to 40 for Wayne

County. Sophomore center Cody Decker had 11 rebounds to lead Wayne County on

the boards. Decker also had 2 blocked shots in the contest.

"Cody was big on the board getting 11 rebounds," said Woods. "But in the

end we made too many mistakes on the offensive and defensive ends while

shooting poorly. Add all these together and you have the recipe for a loss

and that is exactly what happened."

With the loss, Wayne County dropped to 3-19 on the season. Madison

Central improved to 19-5 on the season.

Next up for Wayne County was a game Tuesday night at home against the

Somerset Briar Jumpers.
